Girl Meets Lifeless Angel

[ R i l e y ]

She wouldn't have to hide in her room anymore. She would come down for dinner.

"Oh, good, you're home" Katy chirped, as Maya and I entered the front door.

Maya's sleeves were rolled down, to cover the cuts she had imprinted on her wrists.

"Leave us alone" Maya snapped, rolling her eyes and walking over to the couch.

She threw her bag onto the floor, and ran up the stairs. I wanted to follow her, but Katy grabbed me by the wrist.

"Katy.." I wanted to scream, but I decided not to, for now.

"I'm really sorry." She started, "I never really got the chance to say this, but I ruined everything, and I know you're upset with me, but please don't hate me"

"I don't" I muttered, yanking my wrist away from her grasp.

"Good," she smiled. I smiled too, but I actually wanted to take her by the neck, slam her against the wall, and beat her up with a chair.

With quick movements, I turned around and followed the trail of hatred into Maya's room.

"Maya, peaches?" I knocked on the door.

There came no answer, but the door slowly opened, revealing my broken blonde angel.

I walked towards her, and held her in my arms. I buried my head in her shoulder, and cried.

My tears rolled down my cheeks and landed on her neck.

"Riley, angel" she whispered, stroking my hair with her gently hands, "Hush, it'll be alright"

I sniffled, as she held me closer to her. I could stay in her arms forever, everything I ever wanted was right here, holding me close in reassurance.

I decided to be happy, and enjoy the moment, even though I knew deep down that one day she would have to let go.

We all stared at each other awkwardly at the dinner table. I poked my food with my fork, fiddling with it but not eating anything.

I looked at Maya, who kept her head down.

She was down here for once.

That's good, right?

"So, Maya, you ran off today?" Cory started, looking at Maya harshly, as if he was trying to get her to reveal something.

"You shouldn't ask her these things, dad, do you really want her to hide in her room again?" I stammered.

"You're right, Maya I hope you're okay" a smile plastered on his face, I'm sure it was forced.

I glanced over to Maya's empty plate, and watched as she got up, and went back upstairs.

"Riley, if you're unhappy, I can understand-" Cory was saying, before I cut him off.

"Save it, Cory, my happiness doesn't matter to you, I know that" I got up too, and went up to find Maya.

I placed my hand on the handle of the door, and I turned it. It was stuck.

Her door was locked.

No.

No it can't be.

"Maya?" I knocked lightly.

There was no response.

"Maya, baby open the door"

I can't believe I just said that. Riley, she's straighter than a pole.

"I'm sorry Riles" her voice rang in my ears through the door, "I love you"

I heard a loud 'clang'

It was the sound of her blade hitting the floor.

"Maya!" I kicked the door open, screaming, drenched in tears.

On the ground I found Maya, with cuts all over herself. She was laying in a puddle of her own blood, and her eyes were closed, tightly. She was barely breathing, and I cried harder as I watched her weak, seemingly-lifeless body laid there.

"Cory, Katy!" I ran downstairs as quick as I could, to tell them what had happened to Maya. In a few hours, we were all sitting in the emergency room, my Maya laying there on the hospital bed, with her life on the line.
