Girl Meets Letting Maya Down

It's officially been a day since I saw Auggie-Doggie Matthews, who was my brother, and my only sibling.

I wish he could stay, but that was the last I saw of him.

I couldn't see Maya either, because I was laying in my own hospital grave.

The thought of Maya loosing all that blood, slowly dying, made me feel uneasy. If Maya doesn't wake up, I swear, I would kill myself.

What's the point of living if Maya isn't alive?

But she will be, she will be okay, and we'll move to Chicago so I wouldn't have to face Cory and Katy.

I wouldn't have to put up with Darby, and Lucas, and the other people at school.

I would be happy.

Just mom, Auggie, Maya and I.

If only...

The door handle turned slowly, as the door creaked open. I hoped it would be either Auggie or my mom- because I haven't seen her in a year- but to my surprise, it was Shawn.

Shawn Hunter.

He was my fathe- Cory's best friend. He and Maya were so close, but they haven't spoken since the 'car crash'

"Sh-Shawn!" I jumped off the bed, wrapping myself in his embrace. He held me as if I was Maya.

"Riley, it's great to see you! And, you're okay!" We pulled apart. He lead me to back to the bed, plopped down beside me, and gave me another hug.

"I'm okay... Um, Maya, she-"

"No no, don't tell me something happened to Maya too" his smile quickly turned into a frown, concern was dripping from his tone, and by now, his eyes were bloodshot.

"Sh-she cut h-herself, and she m-might not w-wake up" I found my voice cracking mid-sentence. My eyes were, once again, filling up with tears, and I had to let them roll down my pale cheeks.

"Why would she do that!?" Shawn was crying too. I've never seen him this upset before, "I- I can't even apologise to her now"

"Why do you..." my voice was so soft to the point where it was almost inaudible.

"I let her down, I wasn't supposed to. I became a fatherly figure to her, and then I left." he sighed, "I regret everything"

"So do I" I managed to choke out.

"Oh yeah? Why do you?"

"I let her down too... I- I-" I couldn't do it. I can't believe I was about to tell Shawn about Maya and I.

Should I?

No.

"It's okay, take your time" he forced a small, but genuine smile.

"No, I don't have time. You have to go down there before Maya's really gone" I got to my feet, feeling a bit dizzy, but I ignored it. I grabbed Shawn by the arm, and dragged him down the hall. I brought him down the deserted dark halls of the hospital, and into the room where Maya lay.

I lightly pushed the door open, and flicked the lights on.

Shawn and I stepped further into the room, and we saw Maya laying there in the dark. Her hands were rested by her side, and her hair, still scattered everywhere, like the last time I saw her.

"Maya," Shawn whispered, crouching beside her. He swiped a strand of hair out of her face, "I'm sorry I'm too late. I let you down, didn't I? I shouldn't have left, I'm no better th-than Kermit." He shook her lightly, "Can you hear me?"

"Shawn- I..." I started, but I decided not to say anything.

I could see how badly he wanted Maya to wake up. I know exactly how he feels right now.

Seeing Maya like this feels worse than having a knife stabbed into your heart. No- it feels exactly like that.

"Wake up, angel." Shawn buried his face in the bed, I stood from a distance as I watched him sob.

I let a few tears slip.

I clenched my fist, and I realised it was me who let her down.

I had no one else to blame for this.

I, Riley Matthews let her down.

so it's 12:44 am right now, and my mind is alive as heck, help me

you guys probably hate me for typing this book, but trust me, things will turn out the way they should be.

(also I planned ahead, so the sequel makes sense)
