Girl Meets Eighth Grade

[ R i l e y ]

The sunlight peeped in through the window. It shone at my eyes, and I jerked up.

Maya!

Today was the first day of eighth grade, which means I was going to see Maya.

She stayed in her room throughout the entire summer, and today, my dad's making her go to school.

I opened the door, and heard the sound of gushing water coming from the bathroom.

Overflowed with excitement, I raced over to Maya's room, only to find that her door was wide open. I smiled.

Maya's out of her room, finally.

I walked into her room, to make sure she's not in there- she wasn't. Lying flat on her desk, was a neatly folded piece of paper. I saw a few ink marks, so she must have written something.

I reached for the paper, taken over by temptation. I was about to open it up, when I heard the door of the bathroom unlock. I quickly shoved the paper into my pocket, causing it to crumple, and started walking out of Maya's room.

On the way out, I crashed into Maya. She looked at me for a few seconds, but, without saying a word, kept walking.

Why wouldn't she talk to me?

I turned around, hoping to have enough courage to say something to her, but she slammed the door in my face.

Resembling my mom, Topanga. Every time Auggie had a play date with his 'wife' Ava, my mom would lift Ava up, place her outside in the halls, and slam the door in her face.

I missed her so much.

I missed the way everything used to be.

I hated change.

I trudged into the classroom, with my head down. I didn't even look up. I kept my eyes glued to the floor, and crashed into someone.

Fine. I looked up, and saw Lucas.

I was about to apologise, but the only thing that manage to escape my mouth was, "Wow"

I scurried over to my seat, blushing. I can't believe I that just happened. I looked over to the door, and saw Maya standing there, in shock, and it was seconds before she ran out, with tears filling her eyes.

I wanted to run out there and hold her close to tell her everything is okay. But in reality, everything's not okay. She's my stepsister now. She's my straight stepsister.

"Riley?" Cory started, "What happened to Maya? Will she be okay?"

"She'll be fine, dad" I lied, keeping my head down.

"Alright, today we're going to talk about depression, suicide, and self-harm"

Those three words hit me in the heart so hard. Maya. Maya. And Maya.

Cory went on with his rambling, and I stared into a corner, with Maya occupying my thoughts once again.

I wonder where she was.

Maybe I should've followed her. Seeing as she might do something stupid, like cut herself.

I could already see it in my head. My angel, sitting on the floor of a bathroom stall, with blood flowing out of her arms.

Tears were at the verge of spilling. But I held it in.

Class was almost over, maybe I could find Maya.

Every last minute felt like an hour.

I couldn't stand it. I got up, and rushed out of the class, leaving everyone confused.

The first place I could think of to look was the bathroom. I swung the door open, and without thinking, I screamed, "Maya! Don't even think about doing this!" I stepped into the bathroom, and the door slammed shut behind me.

I saw blood oozing out of one of the stalls, and I rushed over to it.

I crashed my fist against the door, "Maya stop that!"

"G-go away, l-leave m-me alone" Maya stuttered, her voice getting weaker and weaker as she spoke.

"No! Let me in" I banged the door once again. My fist was throbbing by now, but I didn't care, "Open the door, Maya, I can help you"

"No you c-can't. Y-you can't fix a b-broken person" her voice cracked, and I could hear silent sniffling through the stall door.

"I want to help you, Maya" I sighed.

I heard the door unlock, and the door flung open.

I rushed in, and crouched down beside Maya, taking the blade from her hand, and placing it on the ground. I wrapped my arms around the broken blonde angel, and held her as close to me as I could.

We both cried.

"It'll be okay, angel" I whispered, reassuringly.

"A-angel?" her voice was still weak, but I knew she wasn't.

"Don't hurt yourself anymore, I love you too much to see you like this" I said, as my heart raced faster as each second passed.

"Riley, you're an angel"
