Dave went straight back to work once they got home. He was at the recording studio almost all day long everyday. This gave time for Lily to be by herself and work more but it was lonely sitting at home late at night waiting for Dave to get home safely. Every time he did come home late Lily was hardly keeping her eyelids open, "You know you can sleep without me here, right?" Dave asked, pulling his shirt off. "Yeah, I know." Lily yawned, turning in the bed to face him. "Then why don't you?" He asked, throwing the shirt to the floor. "What if you don't make it home and no one knows where you are? Who's going to help you if I'm not awake to make sure you come home?" Lily asked rhetorically, Dave replied with a sigh, "You can't keep yourself up like that. It's not healthy. If you're tired, sleep." He unbuttoned his jeans, Lily groaned and rolled over pulling the comforter over her shoulder to hide her face from his sight. "I worry about you." She mumbled under her breath. After Dave took his jeans off he walked around the other side of the bed, he sat down. Lily's eyes were closed and she was breathing deeply, "I love you very much. I'm sorry I've been working." He leaned down and kissed her forehead before he laid down next to her.The next few weeks were the same, Dave was working just as much and he was hardly spending any time with Lily. Lily eventually stopped waiting up for Dave since he reassured her so many times that she didn't have to.
Dave came home earlier than usual, Lily was in the kitchen making herself dinner when he came in. She turned to look at him, "Well hi! You're home really early." Lily pointed out, placing her hands behind her on the counter. "Yeah, my manager told me I needed to go home." He said with an annoyed tone. Lily looked down at her feet before taking in a breath, "Do you want to have dinner with me?" She asked softly, looking up at him. He smiled warmly and walked over to her placing a kiss on her lips, "I would love to." She smiled and stared into his eyes, he looked tired. Like really tired. She knew he wasn't sleeping well and when he couldn't sleep he would get up and sit down stairs to work even more. Even when he did sleep heavily he woke up only a few hours later to go back to the studio. "Then go set the table." She demanded with a smirk turning back around to the stove. He did as she said, Dave would never admit it but he was wrapped around her finger just as tightly as she was his.
She set the plate down in front of him then sat down. "Pasta? This is what you make when I'm not home?" He smiled, "It's the easiest thing to make if I don't feel like making anything. Do you want it or not?" She asked, raising her eyebrows at him, waiting for his response. He didn't say anything and just looked down at the food before eating it. "I know you probably don't want to talk about work, but since it is the only thing you've been doing. How's it going?" Lily asked twirling her fork on her plate to collect a good amount of pasta. "It's going, I guess. I've finished writing a few songs, but now I'm just struggling to finish the others. We have a drummer now, so I don't have to worry about that." Lily nodded, "What about another guitarist." Dave shrugged, "Still working on that one." He said simply. Dinner was mostly quiet for the rest of their meal. Dave said he was going to bed right after, Lily kissed him goodnight and he dragged his heavy exhausted body up the stairs.
Lily joined him a few hours later, but she didn't stay asleep long when she felt his body shift in the bed. He got up and grabbed his lighter off of the night stand. Lily kept her eyes shut so he wouldn't know she was awake and he left the bedroom. She could hear his weight on the stairs as he went down each step. Lily let out a small sigh and lifted her body holding it up by one of her arms. She peered around the dark room, her eyes adjusting to the darkness.
Lily hated confrontation, it was humiliating and always stirred things. But she knew she couldn't let Dave continue to do this to himself. He was exhausting himself, working to the bone. She couldn't stand to be left in a big empty house anymore. So she followed him, putting her slippers on and she went downstairs. Dave was sitting on the back porch steps. Lily opened the back door and shut it behind her as she walked over to him. Dave was looking up at her when she sat down next to him, pulling her arms around her body. "It's so fucking cold." She complained, pulling her knees to her chest. "It is still technically winter." His voice was raspy and dry, the joint between his fingers was burning slowly. Lily held out her pointer finger and thumb. Dave handed the weed to her and she put it between her lips. Taking in a deep inhale she let the smoke fill her lungs. "Why do you keep doing this?" She asked gently, taking another hit. If she had to argue with him about his behavior she'd rather not do it sober. Unfortunately Dave was thinking the same thing. "Keep doing what?" He asked obliviously as if he hadn't been working like a dog. "This. Waking up at ungodly hours just to sit and ponder or work. Just talk to me, I've tried asking you how I can help you, but all you do is push me away." Lily said with a sad tone looking up at the sky. "I need to work, Lily. I'm not pushing you away, you just can't do anything to help me." He said, annoyed, Lily rolled her eyes, "If you didn't bottle all your emotions and hide them from everyone, maybe you would let someone help you." Dave sighed, "Do we really need to do this right now?" He asked looking at her, Lily looked at him. "Yes, we do. You are working too much. You're exhausted and you're hardly home. When you are home you eat and then sleep. I appreciate that you're working hard, but I want you to be home with me." Lily's eyes were watering now, if she blinked the tears would start rolling down her cheeks like a river after heavy rain. Dave didn't say anything for a minute as he stared at her reddening eyes. "I don't know what you want me to tell you."
