Wednesday still didn't understand why she was back here.
The last 3 months had been a blur that she'd barely registered. All she knew was that she was back here.
After spending the whole summer neutralizing any and all potential threats to the school or anyone attending, her parents seemed more than happy to send her back.
Here.
Nevermore.
She felt split in two.
Half of her wanted to leave immediately but the other half wanted to find her friends.
Friends. Whoa. That was a first.
She noticed Ajax across the very wide hall, staring at her, and she regretted ever even thinking of him as a friend.
His face went pale. He nervously said something into his cell phone and slowly walked away backwards.
He was lucky he was a valuable asset and source of information or he would have been "expelled" ages ago.
Also, Enid liked having him around, which made Wednesday want to kill him more. Enid said he was "funny" and "made her laugh". Wednesday did that all the time and better.
Her dark thoughts halted when Thing tapped her shoulder.
"What is it?" She questioned, scanning the area.
Thing made a half heart sign and pointed just 20 feet ahead to the fireplace.
"What does that mean?" Wednesday raised an eyebrow. "Stop trying internet speak in verbal conversations."
"I think you know." Thing signed before retreating slowly back into his backpack.
Wednesday took a deep sigh and walked to the fireplace. Her curiosity was a bit too strong sometimes.
The fireplace seemed normal enough. It was polished to perfection. Well, almost perfection. There was a fire burning but it was giving off no heat. That wasn't very common. Wednesday had read about "false fireplaces" before but never thought a school would be stupid enough to buy one.
Thing rustled furiously in her backpack. What was his deal? All day he had been anxious and desperately wanting to get back to Nevermore.
Wednesday placed the bag on the ground and Thing timidly crawled out.
"You may go. Just do not be seen or you will be sleeping in a drawer for the rest of term." Wednesday commanded.
Thing spun in a circle and happily scuttled off.
"Still trying to be threatening?" A voice behind her said.
Wednesday turned and looked down.
"Sinclair?"
Enid waved up at her slightly. "Hi."
Everything kinda froze as they looked at each other. So much needed to be said. So much needed to be done. Neither had any idea of where to start or if it could ever start.
"Why are you curled up on the floor?" Wednesday tried.
"Uh. . . I fell?" Enid said slowly. She didn't want to offput Wednesday by saying the truth.
Wednesday narrowed her eyes. "I see." She held her hand out.
Enid hesitantly took it and stood up. Now that she was standing here in front of Wednesday, she noticed she was even taller now. There used to be a 1 inch gap, now it was closer to 3.
Enid couldn't look Wednesday in the eyes.
"How are your scars healing?" Wednesday asked.
"Huh?" Enid instinctively reached at her face. She couldn't even feel the scars anymore. "Uh, good? Do they look bad?"
Wednesday almost reached out to touch the other girl's cheek but fought the urge. "They look. . . perfect. . . ly fine."
Enid swallowed the lump in her throat. "Good, good." Her nervous gaze fell from Wednesday's chin to her hands then to her ear. Why hadn't she noticed?! "Wednesday what happened?!" She gasped, grabbing the dark girl's hands and examining them. They were scarred badly. They seemed healed and faded but looked terrible.
"Er, Enid."
"And what happened here?!" Enid carefully brushed against Wednesday's cheek and tucked her hair behind her ear to get a better look at the scars there. "Wednesday, what did you do to yourself?!"
"Unhand me."
Enid's face flushed as she realized the romantic position she'd unknowingly put them in. She jumped back and flattened herself against the wall.
"Haha. . . sorry." Enid's chest was pounding so hard she was sure Wednesday could hear it.
"It is. . . fine. Thank you for your concern. These are mostly temporary. Little things I unfortunately picked up this summer." Wednesday was about to continue rambling about her crusade before she saw Enid's worried expression.
"What?"
"You're gonna hate me." She said sheepishly.
"I could never-" Wednesday said before she even realized the implications of what she'd said.
Enid slowly pulled her into a gentle hug.
Wednesday froze. This interaction used to unsettle her and make her irrationally irritated. Used to make her lose all interest. Used to give her a reason to hate. But none that came to her mind. No feelings surfaced other than a slight warmth. Comfort.
She reciprocated the hug very slowly but soon found herself melting.
She knew she shouldn't have come back.
"Enid, that's enough." Wednesday sighed after maybe 10 seconds.
"Oh. . . Right. . ." Enid pulled away. "I guess I was a little touch starved, ya know?" She smiled sadly. "My family doesn't really express love that way. Well, they do! Just mostly fighting and playing. Hugs are. . . Different. Better, I think. Sorry if it made you uncomfortable." She walked past Wednesday a little but then stopped. She held up her hand and hesitated for a second before softly patting Wednesday on the shoulder. "It's great to see you again, Wens."
Wednesday just nodded and stared at the wall. Thing appeared on top of the fireplace just above her right.
"So? How do you feel?" He signed excitedly.
Wednesday turned to him with an odd color in her face. "Thing, something is terribly wrong with me."
