Thing was just chilling, trying to figure out a way to open a Dorito bag. He was hidden, at least he hoped so. He was really good at hiding, but this school was also full of monsters that could sense things beyond comprehension and lots of snoopy teachers.

And he knew how much they loved Doritos.

Just as he got it open (with some slight help from a nearby nail), there was a huge commotion on the grand staircase. He peeked out from behind his filing cabinet and saw the students on the staircase part like the Red Sea and through them came Wednesday.

She was. . . rushing? Whoa.

Thing scrambled away from his snack and watched her head to the front doors, glance around, and eventually head outside. Behind her through the parted crowd came The Nightshades. They seemed desperate to reach her and were even tripping over themselves to get to her.

Xavier reached the front doors first but stopped in confusion. Bianca slapped him lightly on the shoulder, scolding him. Yoko and Ajax were waving their hands everywhere. Kent was apologizing to someone he ran over and Divana was checking her phone, seemingly unfazed. As Yoko, Ajax, Bianca, and Xavier were arguing, Divana suddenly shushed them and they all went silent. She showed them something on her phone. Bianca grabbed Xavier and ran outside. Yoko and Ajax fell over laughing and Kent was confused. Divana whispered something to him and he quickly followed the rest of them outside.

Thing darted after them, stealthily crawling into Kent's backpack.

Wherever Wednesday went, he went.

Thing was scuttling around the forest floor. This reminded him slightly of the night Enid wolfed out, but he didn't like to think about it. Neither did Wednesday. Hell, she made him swear to never mention it again to anyone who didn't already know. And never around her or Enid. He understood, of course. That night was horrific for them both.

They were only 15.

It felt like so long ago. Probably because Wednesday had spent the last two years fighting her emotions and burying herself in work so she could avoid what made her feel anything abnormal.

Thing tagged along. He always would. He would always be there for her, and he knew she knew that but would never open up to him about anything.

But to Enid? Definitely. Goodness, he hadn't seen a pair so obviously and irrevocably in love since Morticia and Gomez first met.

Wednesday was what the Addams family called "a contrary," although Wednesday hated being labeled as it. It happened usually once a generation or so. It was used to describe a child who was different, so different in fact that they couldn't fit in right even in the Addams family. "Contrary" children were rebellious and distant, never humorous but extremely witty, never displaying any emotions, and hated physical touch and romance. Most usually left the family before they were 18.

Thing had never seen one cave so easily like Wednesday had. Of course, he would never tell her he thought that (for fear of being locked in a metal box and sent down a river), but they both knew it was true.
