- CHAPTER FORTY-FIVE -
After Images

"You all right?" Corey asked as he, Mason, Lydia and Iris sat around in the chemistry class. Lydia was staring at a fire with a pencil and paper, trying to trigger a premonition to find Brett, who was hurt and missing. Iris had her eyes closed holding Brett's bloody lacrosse stick, a map of Beacon Hills laid out in front of her with a chain necklace on it. "Yeah, why?" Mason asked and Corey shrugged slightly, "Just checking."

"No, it's okay. I don't see anything." Mason said, glancing around the room before looking back at Iris and Lydia, making Corey furrow his brows. "Huh?" He asked and Mason shook his head, "Nothing."

"Quiet! Please." Lydia said, making the boys awkwardly purse their lips, "Sorry." They said at the same time. It was quiet for a moment before Corey leaned closer to Mason, "Have they ever tried this before?" He whispered. "Initiating a premonition and a tracking spell? A few times. Premonitions usually find them, Iris probably has done most spells." Mason said.

"How will it help us find him?" Corey asked and Mason shrugged slightly, "Iris' spell works, the necklace will move to the spot on the map where he is. If it doesn't work then she's either not supposed to know or it means he's dead and I think Lydia would already know if that's the case." Mason said and Corey nodded slightly as they watched Iris and Lydia.

"Do you think it's working?" Corey asked and Iros sighed in annoyance and opened her eyes, "It might if the two of you stop talking." She said, shooting them a look, making their eyes widen as they stopped talking. Lydia and Iris glanced at each other and sighed softly before Lydia turned back to the flame and Iris closed her eyes.

A second later Corey picked up one of the balls on the Newton's Cradle that sat on the desk before dropping it making the bead hit each other. Mason panickedly grabbed the thing, trying to stop it while also making more noise making Iris and Lydia look at them again.

"Sorry."

Iris suddenly started seeing flashes of Brett running through the underground tunnels covered in blood as her necklace circled around a spot on the map. At the same time as that happened, Lydia's face became distant before she started writing. Once Lydia stopped writing, Iris took a deep breath, glancing down at the map. "The tunnels." Iris said, making them look at her, "What?" Corey asked. "Brett's in the tunnels and he's not doing very good. If they don't find him soon, he's not gonna last." She said and Mason nodded before he quickly pulled out his phone to text Liam.

"Does anyone speak Chinese?" Corey asked as he looked at what Lydia wrote. "My phone does." Mason said as he finished texting Liam before he took a picture of the paper. "Lux-vee..." Corey started to say until Iris cut him off, "It's a Roman numeral. Sixty-eight. It also says sixty-eight in French right here." She said, pointing at one of the words and Lydia nodded in agreement.

"Sixty-eight. That's what the Chinese says, too." Mason said as he looked down at his phone. "E-R..." Lydia said looking down at the paper and Corey furrowed his brows, "E-R what?" He asked. "Erubium. The atomic number for erubium is sixty-eight." Lydia said, looking back at the element chart behind them while Iris nodded slightly as she looked over the page, "Everything on this just says sixty-eight." Iris said.

"Sixty-eight what?" Mason asked and Lydia sighed softly, "I have no idea." She said. "Okay, so what do we try next?" Mason asked and Lydia squinted slightly in thought, "I'm going back to where my last premonition was..." She said before turning to look at the guys.

"And only Iris is coming with me." She said, making the guys frown slightly and look at each other guilty.

"Sixty-five... sixty-six... sixty-seven... sixty-eight." Lydia said, counting as she and Iris slowly took a step with each count. Iris turned to the locker she stood next to with furrowed brows before lifting up the lock then letting it fall back against the locker making realization cross over her features.

"Sixty-eight." She said, glancing over at Lydia who looked up at the numbers on the lockers, seemingly getting what Iris was thinking. They walked over to locker #068 which didn't have a lock on it and Lydia quickly opened it only to reveal it completely empty.

She sighed before closing it and turning to Iris who pursed her lips, "Okay, so it's not locker number sixty-eight." She said and Lydia nodded before they started walking. "What else could Sixty-eight mean?" Lydia asked and Iris sighed and shook her head slightly, "It could mean the number sixty-eight or sixty-eight things or... anything." Iris said, making Lydia sigh softly.

They turned the corner and almost ran into Nolan, making them all jump slightly, "Sorry." Lydia said before walking past him. Iris glanced back before her eyes widened when she saw his lacrosse sweater. "Lydia." Iris said, making Lydia look at her, "Yeah?" She asked and Iris gestured to Nolan.

"Sixty-eight." She said, making Lydia look at Nolan's sweatshirt before her eyes widened, "Hey, sixty-eight! Hey, hey!" She said running over to him and grabbing his arm, making him stop. "Do you know anything about Brett?" Iris asked, making him look at her confused, "Who?" He asked.

"Brett Talbot. Lacrosse player. What happened to him?" Lydia asked and Nolan looked at her deeply confused, "I don't know any Brett." He said before glancing in between the two of them and his eyes widened slightly.

"You're both one of them, aren't you?" He asked and this time they looked at him confused, "One of who?" Iris asked. He didn't answer her, just quickly ran away from them looking freaked out, making Iris and Lydia glance at each other confused.

"It was about Nolan." Lydia said as they stood in front of Mason and Corey again, "Would've been nice to know before he attacked me." Corey said and Iris shook her head slightly. "He wasn't trying to hurt you. He was trying to expose you. That was nothing but a test." She said and Lydia nodded.

"Well, you definitely failed. It was a geyser-half the library was staring. You didn't even have a scratch!" Mason said and Corey nodded irritably, "Yeah, I remember, because it was, like, five minutes ago." He said and Mason looked back at Iris and Lydia.

"Why would Nolan do that?" He asked and Lydia shook her head slightly, "He's afraid." She said and Corey raised his eyebrows. "Of me?" He asked and Iris sighed softly and shook her head, "Of us." She said. "I thought your guy's premonition was about people turning on each other?" He asked and Lydia and Iris glanced at each other.

"We were wrong. They're gonna turn on us.... And I think it's already started."
