"Don't sweat it Draco." Lucius's gaze appeared a lot softer in front of his son. "I just wanted an update on your condition."
Like he wasn't the one who caused it.
"I'm doing a lot better actually," Draco responded.
I clutched my wand, I was prepared for this battle. I knew Lucius was going to start something. He was at least going to do something.
But he didn't.
He simply walked closer to Draco and planted a small kiss on his forehead. The grip on my wand loosened. It felt as though I was invisible.
I understood now why Draco was so defensive about his parents. They were everything to him.
"I'll leave you two now." And to that he departed.
Draco immediately burst into tears. His face hid by his long fingers. I heard sniffles, I practically ran closer to him, my hands resting on his shoulders.
"Draco, what's wrong?" I looked around to see if his mother and aunt had noticed, but the two of them were gone.
"Draco, why are you crying?" I felt his arms around my waist as he rested his head on my collarbone.
"It's...it's tears of happiness.." he wiped the water coming through his eyes. "It's everything I've ever wanted..."
Once the sniffles were silent, he began explaining. "I think it was the child inside of me crying."
"I remember...I think I had gotten injured once during a quidditch battle and was in the hospital wing...and my mother came to visit me...but I desperately..desperately wanted my father to come and visit me, to tell me that I was going to be alright, to be present with me in this vulnerable moment." he choked out his words.
"But all I got was a new broom as a gift and a get-well card from him, I cried so much that night that Blaise heard me and asked me why I was a mess, and I told him that I didn't want any gifts, or money, or anything but just wanted my father to see me." he looked at me. "I love my father, I love every gift he has given me, I love the times he has spoiled me, but sometimes I feel as though I've been starved from his presence in my life."
"And...today I finally received the affection, the presence, I had practically died for." I comforted Draco, wiping the excess tears off his face with my slim fingers.
It felt so gut-twisting to know that Draco's father was the cause of Draco's injury yet there was nothing I could do about it.
But I couldn't risk this happening again.

"Why are you here, Emerlyn?" Lucius straight up inquired, as I stepped into his room. He was well aware I was there.
"Because I want to chat with my dearest father-in-law."
He huffed. "You will never learn will you, don't start games you can't finish. You should be aware by now--that when it comes to cat and mouse...I'm ready to risk my own family."
"And that's what makes you so disgusting. You've become so engulfed in hunting after your victims that you're ready to sacrifice your own family. You should feel ashamed."
Lucius sighed. "I thought maybe this injury on your husband would cause you to fear me, but you're quite the opposite, dear daughter-in-law," he said. "This recklessness of yours will lead to your demise."
