She wasn't floating when I found her. She wasn't exactly sinking either... just still.
Deadly still. At least, I thought she was dead. Everything about it—the way the water pushed past her, the sand that was rising up to cover her arms and legs—it all just felt empty. Like it was too late to save her. Like she was gone.
Looking back, even after everything that changed because of her, I'm glad that I was wrong.
