Fact number three: Comatose patients may sometimes have muscles spasms, or even do things like laugh or open their eyes. It's normal, but it can give the person in the chair beside them a dose of false hope.
Emma smiled.
In the coma, when her bruises were almost all gone and only the worst of her injuries still remained, she still smiled.
It made something inside me jump for a moment. For a moment, I thought it was over, that she was fine. But as soon as the smile came, it was gone.
"... But I'm not sure what color I'm going to paint the kitchen. Blue or green, I think." I trailed off. When I was sitting here, it felt awkward when I didn't talk to her. I didn't know if she could really hear me or not, probably not, but at least I wasn't just sitting anymore. "Not a warm color, though. I think I'll paint it something cool."
