[hyunjin pov]

i sat in my lounge watching TV, just counting the days until i'd be unable to pay rent.

i had already sold multiple of my expensive items, but it just wasn't enough to stay at the nice apartment i currently lived in.

but i didn't wanna leave this place, it was just too nice.

BANG BANG BANG!

there were 3 extremely loud knocks on my door.

"jesus christ..." i muttered, "am i being robbed?..."

BANG BANG BANG!

there were the 3 knocks again, followed by some shouting behind the door. it sounded like a female voice.

out of curiosity, i stood up from the couch and slowly walked up to the door.

"...who is it?" i asked.

"IT'S YEJI! OPEN UP NOW!" she cried.

my heart started to race, what could've happened that made yeji panic so much?

i quickly opened the door to see her out of breath.

"what happened?-" "FELIX WENT INTO CARDIAC ARREST!" she cut me off.

my heart dropped, "WHAT!" i shouted.

"CHRIS IS WAITING OUTSIDE, WE'RE DRIVING TO THE HOSPITAL. NOW!" she demanded.

i quickly put my shoes on and rushed out of the door, following yeji to chris's car.

as i got into the car, chris immediately started driving, i hadn't even put on my seatbelt yet.

i still hadn't gotten time to process what was happening. in a way, i didn't want to believe it.

i had prepared myself for felix's death for weeks now, i knew it was going to happen at some point. now that it could be happening, why am i so surprised?

and why am i so scared?

i felt myself begin to hyperventilate but stopped before anyone noticed. i looked at chris in the front of the car, to see him gripping the steering wheel so tightly you could tell how much pressure he felt right now.

the amount of pain and anxiety that was probably going through chris's brain right now, i didn't want to try to imagine. however, i was feeling it to.

the car ride was silent, except for the fact that yeji was on call with dr. han for the entire time as she we checking up on felix's condition.

"mhm... yes. i see. alright. yes, i understand." she nodded.

"tell us what's going on then?!?!" chris shrieked in desperation, his voice cracking.

that was the first time he had spoken in the entire car journey. he sounded terrified.

"hold on, i'll put him on speaker," she paused, holding the phone up in the air, "dr. han, they can hear you now..."

the quokka's voice came through the phone, "so, i'm going to get straight to the point. after felix had gone into cardiac arrest his heart completely stopped, but after treatment, his heart started working again but his heartbelt very slow at the moment and cannot pump to the standard of most beings. because of this, we've put him into an induced coma as well as life support, and he will most likely not be able to come out of this coma until he has a heart transplant. he will rest in intensive care unit until we find a suitable fit, as we are getting to the stage where this is the only option left for felix now."

chris gulped, "b-but what putting a machine on him that pumps his heart for him?!?! you can do that surgery with my permission right?!?! i'm a family member!"

dr. han cleared his throat, "if you're talking about installing a left ventricle assist device, i'm afraid we cannot do that without felix's direct permission. the procedure of putting in an LVAD required open heart surgery and it is a major risk that could get us sued if felix were to die from it."

"but felix will definitely fvcking die if you don't give him this! it's less of a possibility that he'll die during the procedure than he'll die in the state he is right now!" chris remarked.

"i'm sorry, but it's just protocol." the squirrel-like doctor stated.

i snatched the phone from yeji's hand, "JISUNG, YOU'RE PROTOCOL IS SHIT AND HAS ONLY LEAD TO BAD THINGS AND YOU KNOW THAT! STOP FVCKING AROUND!"

"hyunjin please... can we talk about this at the hospital?!?!" dr. han begged.

then, chris snatched the phone from me, "listen dr. han... all of YOUR actions have lead to my brother having a heart attack. i don't fvcking care if his death is basically ensured, but if you don't fvcking save felix's life i'll make sure you regret it till the die you die..." 

the car was silent after that, and so was dr. han.

"...i'll see you guys at the hospital then..." dr. han said before hanging up.

yeji scoffed, "erm, he just hung up on us."

"it's fine... once we're at the hospital i'll be able to talk to him properly..." i exclaimed.

it was almost like, everything bad had happened in the space of 2 days.

why was the world so cruel?
