[felix pov]
some time had passed and nurse hwang had been sitting by my bedside, playing with his fingers anxiously. dr. han had left ages ago.
"so... uh... do you want to tell me something about yourself?" nurse hwang broke the silence, smiling at me.
"no, not really." my arms were still crossed.
nurse hwang hesitated, "oh well.. i'll tell you some things about me then..." he leaned back in his chair and looked at me.
"i'm 23 years old, i'm in my 2nd year of nursing school, i used to work in a care home with a load of old people before, so i know how to treat vulnerable people correctly-"
"did you just say i'm vulnerable? i can't believe you just compared me to an old person!" i butted in, giving him a death stare.
nurse hwang froze, not knowing what to say. "wait- i didn't mean it in a bad way. i meant vulnerable as in, you know, needing care. i'm sorry if i offended you, that wasn't my intention at all."
"okay, i get it, that's enough. just keep talking about yourself." i rudely cut him off again.
this nurse was already starting to annoy me.
he looked nervous, "well, i love biology, and i'm really good at it... so yeah-"
"ohh, so you're flexing how you're good at biology now? are trying to make fun of me because i never went to school?" i tried to piss him off.
"no, not at all. i don't know why you think of me as a rude person, mr. lee. i'm kind to everyone." nurse hwang didn't respond to my teasing, he just sat there, still smiling.
he looked like a clueless ferret.
i gave him a look of both confusion and concern.
"were you bullied in high school or something?" i asked him.
his eyebrow shot up, "...i was not, why do you ask?"
"because usually someone would be rude back if someone was rude to them." i responded.
he paused, looked at me directly in the eyes, and just stared.
he wasn't moving towards me, but i backed away as if he was.
this nurse was really weird.
"...why are you staring at me like that?" i was slightly creeped out.
nurse hwang gazed at me for a couple more seconds, but then snapped out of his odd trance, "it's getting late, i should head home. i enjoyed spending this evening with you, getting to know you was nice."
i looked at him as if he was crazy, "yeah... sure..."
"alright, goodbye mr. lee."
he stood up, letting out a deep noise as he did so. he walked up to the door and opened it slightly, stepping one foot outside the room, while one was still inside. suddenly, he turned his head to face me again.
"oh, and, not everyone is like you, mr. lee. people have different responses to disrespect. you may think that my kindness is a weakness, and that's your opinion, however..."
i rolled my eyes at him, waiting for him to continue his dreadful sentence.
"...i think that your retaliation shows immaturity." he added.
i let out a shocked gasp as he fully stepped out the room and quickly closed the door, saying nothing.
hatred bubbled inside of me.
did my nurse just insult me?
i grabbed the buzzer on my bedside table and pressed it.
dr. han rushed into my room, out of breath.
"felix! is everything alright-" he paused, having a worried look on his face when he saw my irritated expression.
"uhh, what happened?" he asked.
"hwang hyunjin..." i muttered under my breath.
dr. han looked confused, "sorry, what was that?-"
"HWANG HYUNJIN." i raised my voice. "HIM, THAT IS WHAT HAPPENED."
dr. han scratched his head, "i'm sorry... i don't understand what you're trying to say..."
i took a deep breath, "you were right when you said he was different from the other nurses..."
i looked at dr. han, "because.. the other nurses... they didn't INSULT ME!" i shouted the last part.
instead of trying to console my rage, dr. han just tilted his head to the left slightly, "i'm sure whatever he said was just a joke, he seems like a nice guy after all-"
i cut him off, "yeah that's the problem, he's TOO nice, and it pisses me off." i crossed my arms for the second time.
dr. han smiled, "how can somebody be TOO nice? i feel like being overly kind is a characteristic that a nurse needs to have in order to do their job properly."
i sighed, "yeah... i guess..." i continued, "but it just annoys me when he does it, i don't know why."
dr. han snapped out of his thoughts, "you know, you only just met him today, you'll get used to his personality, even if he's a little annoying."
i frowned, "first impressions mean a lot you know, but whatever."
"he's got plenty in store for you, and i know you'll miss him when he leaves, so just make the most of it..." he added.
dr. han opened the door to leave, "like it or not, you two will go through things together, as your condition either gets better, or worse, we'll just pray it's the first option, nurse hwang will be there for you every step of the way. all i ask is that you give him a chance." he smiled at me reassuringly as he left the room.
i frowned, lying down on my side and pulling the thin, pale blue hospital blanket over my frail body.
"nurse hwang... if you're going to be with me every step of the way, i'll make sure i die faster so that i don't have to deal with you anymore..." i muttered, as i drifted off into a deep sleep.
