Saiki looked around. It was dark, a bit humid. The hallway was wide, and the walls were covered in the same vine as it was in the glade. Though he was quickly taken out of his daze when someone grabbed him by the collar.
"YOU IDIOT!!" Kuboyasu screamed, shaking him back and forth. "Now we're all dead!" He said angrily, putting a hand up to his head and taking his glasses off to rack his fingers through his hair. His breathing was heavy, from both the stress, and from carrying Hairo.
"..." Saiki only stared back at him. He was still trying to comprehend his own actions. Why did he do this?! What possessed him to run into the maze?!
SCREEECHHH!!!
They both froze.
"Shit..." Kuboyasu cursed under his breath, voice laced with doom.
'What do we do?'
Taking a few steps back, Kuboyasu shook his head. "Nothing! Just keep running!" And he turned and took off in fear.
"Wait!" Saiki called out, but to no avail. Kuboyasu just left him and Hairo behind. He was now stuck, not knowing what to do. This was his first time in the maze and possibly his last. He ran up to the unconscious boy and flipped him over so that he was facing upwards. He tried shaking him awake, but it wasn't working. Even in the darkness, Saiki could tell he wasn't well. The usual healthy, tanned skin was now pale and littered with blue veins. He checked his pulse, it was there, but it was faint. Hairo wasn't waking up anytime soon and in order to save him, Saiki needed to survive the night. 'Should I just stay near the doors until morning?' He wondered. He then heard another high pitched screech and flinched, his senses heightening. The noise was getting closer. 'No... staying here is a death sentence...' He took one look at Hairo before glancing down the hall. There were multiple ways to go, multiple corridors. Even if he wanted to try and find Kuboyasu, he would get lost. 'I can't go far, but I can't stay either.' He huffed. There really was no right answer, so he did what he thought would be the most logical thing.
Hairo was heavy, especially for a guy like Saiki who wasn't that physically fit. Carrying the boy on his back made his leg muscles burn, he didn't know how Kuboyasu managed to get as far as he did. Taking a right down the corridor closest to the glade entrance, Saiki tried his best to pick up the pace. He grunted, feeling Hairo begin to slip off his shoulders– he had to stop to prop him up again, it was quite the pain. Coming to a stop, he noticed a platform that was at least a foot below his height. 'Damn...' Taking Hairo off his back, he took him from underneath his armpits and hoisted him upwards to get him on the platform first, then it was Saiki's turn. Placing both hands on the platform, he swung a leg upward and rolled onto the hard surface. Out of breath, he laid there for a moment and stared upwards at the night sky. He couldn't see the moon, nor hear any voices coming from the glade. For once, it was completely silent. Though he wouldn't know if it would be comforting to still hear those voices, or taunting.
Though the silence didn't last long.
Something was clicking down the hallway. It sounded as though someone– or something– was running with metal boots on. Then came the deafening screech, and suddenly, Saiki wasn't so tired anymore. Panicked, he stood up and grabbed Hairo. 'Whatever's coming after us... I can't run from it if I'm holding him the whole time–!' But Saiki can't just leave him here to get caught– at least, he can't leave him out in the open.
The vines that were trailing up the wall... they looked sturdy enough. With a few deep breaths and newfound strength, Saiki hoisted Hairo up once again, this time against the wall on the small platform. Of course he had taken the boys equipment off first, attaching it to himself. Then, wrapping the vines around Hairo's waist and arms, his body stood up on his own, and with the other vines, he was camouflaged. 'Not the most humane thing in the world, but it's the only way to keep him safe...' Saiki huffed. Then, jumping down from the platform, he ran. He ran down another large corridor, trying to get away from the noises– the shuffling and clicking noises.
