The autumn breeze tossed leaves down the sidewalk of Willow Bank Elementary School as a little knight trembled louder than the crunching leaves under her sneakers. She walked down the sidewalk with her hand tightly woven in her mother's hand, the other holding onto her stuffed creature.

The school didn't look like her sisters' school. It was painted differently and had more fences around the yards. A large sign with the school's name in bold blinked through a slide show of announcements welcoming its registered students back for the awaited school year despite being mid-September.

"Okay, Mija."

Lilith stopped walking when her mother did, releasing her hand and fixing the knight helmet on her head. She looked around as other students ran past, saying goodbye to their parents; a few were dragged inside while her mother kneeled down with her dress carefully tucked under her. It was time to say goodbye again. Only this time, she didn't have her siblings to say goodbye with.

"I will meet you right here after school." Grace looked warm in the face. Her cheeks were rashed pink, a look Lilith had gotten used to now that her parents weren't home too much anymore. "Miss Leah will walk you out to meet me."

Lilith fluttered her lashes when Grace lifted the visor of her helmet. Her freckles were sprayed across her face from a summer of softball practice. It was the only thing she gained from a team that never let her join after their first game.

Patrick cracked his own head open on her bat.

"Will Daddy be home tonight?" Lilith asked, hugging her dragon to her chest when Grace inhaled a reserved smile.

Five rolled his eyes and looked to Lilith, "There's that look again."

Three sighed, clutching her book bag when Grace tucked Lilith's hair behind her ear. "I'm sure Daddy will finish their music and come straight home!"

Lilith's eyes floated to Three before she rolled her eyes at her best friend's nervous smile. She knew Three was trying to combat Five's negativity, but she could at least try to be believable.

"Soon." Grace rubbed her daughter's knuckles. "But I will call Daddy and make sure they're free for us to read tonight, okay?"

"Okay," Lilith mumbled.

Grace's heart squeezed. She supported her girlfriend's career. It was their dream to be inside the start-ups they'd created for themselves, so she offered to keep this family together like fresh glue. Sometimes there was some sliding, but for the most part, everything was going as well as it could be.
