Ara was in the lobby of the hospital. Foot tapping against the floor impatiently. Her eyes skimmed past the clock ever few minutes as her patience only continued to run out.
If not the clock she was looking at the closed doors. For their first day him and a few other residents had the opportunity to watch a surgery take place. He was in a closed room which meant that if a death bell managed to get to him, then she would get too late and before anyone knew it, he would become the next DEATH.
Shaking her head to get rid of the thoughts, she let out a deep breath in terms of calming herself. But it only ever happened when the doors opened and the head surgeons, several nurses and the residents walked out.
Ara: You're alive.
She said as he approached her after bidding wishes to his colleagues.
Jaemin: Why do you have to say it like that?
She shrugged and glanced around.
Ara: Are you off?
Jaemin: Yup. Shall we head back home?
She nodded and the two walked out together. As they stepped out into the night the chilly night air visibly sent a slight shiver though Jaemin.
Ara: Can we please just teleport? I can not sit though another bus ride.
Jaemin: Stop complaining. Its not even that bad.
Ara: Yeah right.
Jaemin: Tsk. Fine. We won't use the bus. Come on.
Ara: Where are you going?
She called out to his retreating figure but he just kept walking, forcing a groan out of her as she hurried to catch up with him.
---
Ara: When you agreed to head back home with me, i didn't expect you to come here.
He just chuckled.
Jaemin: The food here is the best.
Ara: If you consider packaged food as food. okay... I believe i can cook better.
Jaemin: Oh for sure.
He smiled playfully making her squint her eyes at him.
Ara: You're so annoying.
He just hummed as she watched him bite into his ramen.
Jaemin: If you want you can have some.
He said holding it out for her. But she just shook her head, sipping on her useless drink, which tasted good no doubt.
Jaemin: So... you told me that if a death bell gets to me, i get turned into DEATH.
Ara: Yeah...?
Jaemin: So how did you die?
She didn't answer immediately, forcing Jaemin to look at her. She was silently staring ahead at the glass. He looked over as well only to meet her eyes through the reflection. She was watching him through there, and even through the glass, he could see her eyes flash in pain.
Jaemin: You don't have to answer...
He said, maintaining the eye contact. Ara sighed and leaned back in the chair.
Ara: Did you know... we used to be lovers in our first life?
Jaemin sat up in his seat, this time facing her, curious about both, what she said and how she was actually giving him an answer. She too glanced at him for a second, but looked back at her drink quickly.
Ara: I don't remember much... But i remember dying while saving you.
Her voice was in a low whisper but Jaemin could hear everything crystal clear.
Ara: You were a prince... i was a mere servant. You were a target to be taken out so that the kingdom wouldn't have a heir. Your elder brother was already dead and you were next in line for the throne.
She paused for a while, gulping.
Ara: I died in your arms... not long after you were killed by being poisoned and your entire kingdom fell apart. At least that's what history says. I was obviously not there to witness it...
Jaemin only continued to stare at her. For some reason the more she said the more he felt like he actually lived that.
Ara: When i became DEATH and i was assigned to you... i actually fell in love with you again... and again... every one of your lives.
Jaemin: And this one?
She turned to him. Their eye contact was not like any other. It felt so much more intense and personal to Jaemin. And when she smiled sadly, he felt something in him. An unknown but known feeling.
Ara: I never stopped loving you Jaem.
