Just five more minutes and the clock will announce midnight, signifying that Rooh SHAHMIRI is about to turn 17.
In a cautious manner, Rooh entered Zaviyaan's room, holding a cake in one hand and candles in the other, while balancing herself. Slowly turning the doorknob, she tiptoed into the room. Zaviyaan, upon hearing the door creak open, immediately stood upright and switched on his night lamp. Startled, Rooh appeared before him.
"What is happening..." he began to say, but his sentence was cut short when he noticed Rooh holding a cake and candles. As he was about to turn on the light switch, Rooh stopped him, whispering,
"Don't, dim lights create a more aesthetic ambiance." Zaviyaan shook his head in response to her immaturity. Rooh swiftly climbed onto his bed and requested a lighter. Instead, he asked her to hand him the candles, aware that she could potentially burn herself. One by one, he lit the candles and placed them on the cake, saying,
"Happy birthday Rooh."
Whispering, he gazed into her eyes, captivated by her beauty illuminated by the gentle flicker of candlelight. Her honey-colored eyes seemed to radiate, causing dizziness to consume him.
"I appreciate your kind words," Rooh replied with a small smile.
Zaviyaan chuckled and shook his head, questioning her late-night intrusion. "Why did you choose to quietly enter at such a late hour? Aise chup chup k aane ki kya zarurat thi kal aajati, as I have no intentions of leaving."
Rooh drew nearer, resting her head on his shoulder. "Hmm, it may be true that you have no plans to depart, but I do," she replied, causing Zaviyaan to swiftly turn his head towards her.
"Where?" he inquired, growing impatient. Rooh observed his reaction and decided to playfully tease him.
"I am returning to my home," she said with a tinge of sadness. Zaviyaan felt the air being knocked out of his lungs.
"When... when will you come back?" he attempted to steady himself. Internally, Rooh smirked.
"Actually, I won't be coming back," she revealed, causing anxiety to consume Zaviyaan. Before he could respond, she added, "Also, since today is my seventeenth birthday, my parents have proposed my engagement to my second cousin." Rooh exhaled dramatically and continued... "And my soon-to-be fiancé desires for me to complete my studies in Multan." she concluded her story, though the expression on Zaviyaan's face alarmed her.
Zaviyaan felt a sinking sensation in his stomach and his insides churned upon hearing her words. He was unable to utter a single word and felt a dizzying sensation. He firmly grasped her elbow and pulled her towards him.
"What nonsense are you talking about, Rooh'" he managed to hoarsely utter. Rooh glanced at his face and burst into laughter.
"Ullu banaya!"she managed to say amidst her snorts.
Zaviyaan pulled her into an embrace and buried his face in her hair, calming his heart and mind. Rooh closed her eyes, sensing his presence all around her; he was her haven.
"I despise you for this," he exhaled, still unwilling to let her go. He ran his fingers through her hair, causing her to hum contentedly.
"Jhooth na bolein, I know like me" she said, summoning all her courage. She tightly shut her eyes, anxiously awaiting his response. His chest rumbled with laughter.
"Who wouldn't like a little strawberry like you."he stated, causing her disposition to sour. Upon realizing that he merely views her as a young girl, she displayed her dissatisfaction by pouting her lips. She released herself from the embrace and extended her small, pink hand towards him inquiringly.
"May I receive my gift?" she inquired with a hint of sass. He leaned towards his desk, retrieved the latest iPad, and handed it to her. She emitted a joyful cry and embraced him once more, being careful not to cause harm.
" thank you so much," she repeated with enthusiasm.
"Very well, now proceed to your room," he instructed her.
"I wanted to share something with you," she mentioned. He nodded, signaling for her to continue.
"I was not lying, I will be departing for Multan. I will be gone for one month," Zaviyaan's eyes widened in astonishment.
"Why?!" he almost exclaimed. She proceeded to explain her vacation plans and the yearning she felt towards her family.
"Alright..." he sulked, desiring to dissuade her from leaving but not wishing to appear overbearing. Additionally, her family awaited her presence, providing him with the utmost relief knowing that she would return.
Rooh cast her gaze upon him, her countenance adorned with a mischievous expression as she posed a question,
"Will you miss me?"She momentarily pondered if her question even warranted an inquiry, considering she stood before him and he already yearned for her company.
"No," he curtly replied, eliciting a snicker from Rooh.
"Dekhtein hain,"she retorted. With nimble precision, she skillfully sliced the long-forgotten cake, and they both indulged in a quiet meal.
