"So where do you two stand?" Linda asked her friend as they continued to put together the party favors.
"We're not on good terms," she said before chuckling. "We definitely exchanged some ugly words the last time we spoke."
"Ugly? How so?"
"I bumped into him in the car park at target a little while back and given that we hadn't spoken in a good minute, I think we just had a few things to get off our chests, so we did just that,"
"When was that?"
"I think it's been like 4 or 5 weeks now," she said, trying to think back to the incident. "But we haven't spoken since and as you already know, I'm moving on,"
"Damn," Linda said and Nicki just rolled her eyes knowing where this conversation was headed. "I won't lie I was hoping we'd have babies together and start this wifey shit together,"
Nicki sighed. "That was the plan, but I don't think he wanted that and if I'm being honest, I wasn't gonna wait around for him and his commitment issues,"
"So there isn't a chance for y'all at all? Like you don't even think about him and what the future held for y'all?"
"It's thinking about the future that made me leave. I wanted more, I deserved more than what he was willing to give, and trust me I told him that too,"
"I wish I was there to witness," she said and Nicki chuckled but shook her head. "There's a lot of love there, Nic. So much so that it shows even in your arguments. But do you think this new guy has what you're looking for?"
"It's still very new. We haven't even put labels on it yet, so I guess only time will tell,"
"You said he's coming tomorrow didn't you?" Nicki nodded. "Well I'm excited to see how he gels with the rest of us, I can't imagine the guys are gonna make it easy,"
"And i don't expect them to, but it still doesn't change the fact that Drake and I haven't been a thing for months now,"
"Not Drake," she said with a hand on her chest, pretending to be wounded by her friend's choice of name.
"I'm not doing this with you Lin," With that Nicki stood with the now completed box of party favors and took them over to join the rest of them in the corner of the room.
"I'm sorry, I want what's best for you too, but somewhere in my heart I believe it's him."
She bit her lip as she observed the many flower arrangements as they sat in vases on the table ready for the morning. "I don't think it is,"
Linda looked at her friend who was now clearly in deep thought, and reopening wounds she probably didn't want to. "Hey, you know I'll support you either way, but like i said before, I just wanted to see where you stand because he is gonna be here tomorrow and I don't want you to feel out of place,"
"Yeah I get it. And we knew this is how it would be when we split. It's the main reason you don't see us in the same space anymore, it's not fair for you guys either,"
"Well as long as y'all can make it through tomorrow and next weekend, I'll let you and your new somebody be,"
"And will, we may be at odds, but we love you and Jay too much to ruin what's about to be the best week of your lives. How does it feel?" she asked, watching as her friend's face lit up.
"It doesn't feel real. Like he's really gonna be my husband from tomorrow and next weekend we get to really cement it. Like I'm really about to be someone's wife,"
Nicki smiled. "I'll be honest, I'm just excited to witness and be a part of my first traditional wedding,"
Linda rolled her eyes. "I just want it all to go well, you know. This was the one thing he asked for so I want it to be done right and then we can all fly out and enjoy the sun in Italy,"
