FOURTY-ONE:
THE THIEF

Elsie's summer had officially ended in disaster. She hadn't even meant to cause so much trouble. It had all just happened.

Summer holiday was something Elsie normally looked forward to, but now... September 1st couldn't come fast enough.

The brunette girl absentmindedly twirled a thin black taser in her fingers as she stared out her bedroom window. The sky was pale blue, with fluffy clouds decorating the surface like icing. It looked inviting, comfortable. Elsie wanted nothing more than to run out the door and breath in the fresh air, however she couldn't.

She was grounded.

What had happened was simple: It was mid July and Elsie had been bored out of her mind. After spending months at her magical school Hogwarts everything in the muggle world seemed dull. She had just wanted to feel a rush of thrill, as she had last year when she battled the basilisk along side her friends.

So the girl had decided to go into town and shop, trying to take her mind off of missing her friends. She had looked around for a while, not really finding anything that suited her fancy, until she came across a dollar store with a display of tasers and pepper spray.

It was Mr. Greenes birthday in a few weeks, so as a gift Elsie decided she wanted to get him his own pepper spray in honor of the memory from her first year where she had sprayed it in a Professors face.

Just the pepper spray, Elsie had promised herself. However it didn't take long for the girl to become infatuated with the rows of tasers. They were sleek and black, disguised as a writing pen, too irresistible to ignore.

It was only a few cents, and Elsie was already planning on paying for the pepper spray, so she thought, what harm could it do? Nobody would ever know.

So she tucked the pen up her sleeve and made her way to check out.

She had payed and started for the door when a siren went off. Elsie could've kicked herself in shame.

The manager had called her foster parents the Greenes and the couple showed up, angry beyond compare. They payed for the taser and the trouble before dragging the 13 year old back home, scolding her all the way.

"We did not raise you to steal Elsie." Mrs. Greene cried.

"It's not that big of a deal!" Elsie argued feeling more embarrassed than ashamed. "Besides it was only a few quarters."

"Think you're beyond paying a few quarters huh? Think you're better than everyone else just because you can do magic?" Mr. Greene was almost purple with rage.

"I'm sorry alright!" Elsie scowled, feeling the weight of the taser pen in her pocket. Somehow she had managed to keep it. "I just... I don't know. I wanted to do something. Feel something."

"Oh you'll do something. From here on out you'll be moping, dusting, doing the linen, setting the tables. All of it." Mr. Greene stated lowly, almost daring her to argue.

Elsie hadn't expected them to understand how she felt. But it still hurt. She knew it was selfish but sometimes she missed her real parents.
