"Warriors are not what you think of as warriors. The warrior is not someone who fights, because no one has the right to take another life. The warrior, for us, is one who sacrifices himself for the good of others.

His task is to take care of the elderly, the defenseless, those who cannot provide for themselves, and above all, the children, the future of all humanity". Sitting Bull

Chapter 11

Dmitri stood in the center of the training grounds looking over the trainees. Twenty young males stood in the clearing ranging from five year olds Jamie and Alex, to the eldest who was twenty-two and in his last season of training before joining a team.

The older trainees, that lived in the barracks, stared fearfully up at him. They had all heard of his reputation as a cold and vicious warrior. He and his team were sent in when the council wished to make an example of someone.

The young that still lived in the house had apparently never heard of his reputation. The young were running around giggling. Had no one told them that warriors do not giggle?

"Lead by example" Dmitri thought to himself. He was unfortunately spending enough time with them that perhaps they would begin to emulate him and become better warriors.

"Attention trainees, today we will not be learning war strategy or fighting techniques. Today we will be reviewing something more important"

"Oooh.. like shooting a gun?Dimi are you going to teach us to shoot stuff?" Jamie squealed as he began to run circles around Dmitri's legs.

Squealing, really? Warriors don't squeal. Teenage girls and baby pigs squeal. Dmitri thought with a frown. With a put upon sigh, Dmitri lifted the boy up onto his hip after he crashed into his legs giggling like a mental patient. At least when he held the small ball of energy he couldn't destroy anything.

Dmitri placed his free hand on his forehead trying to rub away the headache already forming. Just ignore it and carry on, he thought to himself. Who had felt he was an acceptable trainer for the young?

"Today we will be reviewing the Warriors History and Ethos. Who can recite our ethos?" Silence met Dmitri's request.

The faces of the trainees were awash with confusion most of the older males refusing to meet his eyes. The young were staring up at him with expectant looks upon their faces.

"How about our history?"

After a long moment of silence Mike broke in with a question that it seemed no one knew the answer to.

"Mr Dimi, I mean Team Leader Dimi, what's an ethos, and why is it so important?"

Dmitri let out a low growl of frustration. Dropping down to the ground, Dmitri sat and cuddled Jamie close while he tried to calm down enough to teach them something the trainers should have went over every season.

This wasn't just some quick history lecture that no one needed to remember. This was important. This was everything they were. Their reason for being. How could they spend their young lives training to kill and to die and never be told why?

"Don't just stand there, sit your asses down. Lets get this over with." Dmitri growled at the confused males.

The young got as close as possible, cuddling up to his sides and legs like it was story time. At least the older trainees had some decorum. They sat at an acceptable distance with a serious and quite demeanor.

Dmitri took a moment to gather his thoughts before he began his lecture.

"A long time ago"

"Was this when the fairies made the veal?!" Asked Jamie excitedly.

"Veals baby cows, Jamie.". Eric said while giggling uncontrollably.

Really, with the giggling again? Dmitri just shook his head in disgust.

"But why would the fairies make baby cows Dimi? Wouldn't the mama cows make them?"
Jamie asked with tears glistening in his eyes.

"She said veil not veals" laughed Mike.

Dmitri rubbed Jamie's back soothingly as tears began to form in his eyes. Jamie looked up at Dmitri and quietly asked "Was it when Faiths veil was made, Dimi?"

"I don't know, we'll ask Faith at dinner okay?" Glaring at his young surrounding him he continued once the incessant giggling stopped.

"A long time ago the world was at war. Everyone was fighting amongst themselves for power and possessions. The greatest number of casualties were those that could not fight at all. The children, the elderly, and the weak. The council looked around and decided that if this kept on that an entire generation of young could be lost.

The council called the first Cabal of all the leaders. None of the leaders wanted to give up any of the power they had acquired. They argued for days on a solution. They finally decided that two groups would be formed.

These groups would be outside of any pack, pride or coven. They would consist of the best of all the supernatural species.  They would have no family ties and be loyal to only each other and their purpose in life.

The first group would be the Enforcers. They would be charged with the policing of the supernatural world.  If anyone knowingly broke the covenant of others they would fall under the jurisdiction of the Enforcers. These males would be the judge, jury, and executioners of the lawless.

The second group were the Warriors. These males would be the protectors of the weak. The young. The infirm. Any who could not defend themselves were placed under the protection of the Warriors.  No wars could be fought. No power plays made without the council being notified so that the Warriors could be sent.

Neither group executed their duties for glory or personal gain. They could not be bribed or intimidated.  Their purpose. Their destiny was to fight and die to allow others to live in peace."

Dmitri paused to allow the trainees to digest what they had heard. The clearing was silent as the young waited for him to continue.

"That is what we were bred for.  That is why we breathe and why our hearts beat.  We will train,  we will fight, and we will die so that others do not have to."

"Is that our ethos sir?" Asked Lincoln.

"No Lincoln, that is not.  That is our heart and our soul. Our ethos is more the rules that we follow. It is the guide to shape our lives around.

The Warriors Ethos

I will protect the weak
I will sacrifice so others live free
I will defend those in need with a relentless will
I will stand at my brothers side with honor and purpose
I will never put my own desires before the greater good
I will pursue what is right and just
I do these things not for any monetary gain
I do these things for peace
I will live by a spartan code
And live in honor forevermore "

Dmitri met each of the trainees eyes trying to impart how important this was to each warrior.

"Now, trainees who would like to tell me how this impacts your life?"
