Chapter 22

"This is all quite touching" Ebon commented sarcastically. "But can we get on with it. The faster we talk, the faster you can all get out of my Crèche."

"Your crèche, Ebon?" Gauis exclaimed in disbelief. "Have you too forgot the vows we took as we became warriors? Do you no longer have respect for that which we have sacrificed?"

"You dare speak to me about respect and vows." Ebon slammed his fist on the table emphasizing his anger. " What happened to the vows of brotherhood. Where was the respect as your Team Leader eviscerated our Commander?"

Throwing his chair behind him Ebon stood and glared at Gauis. Havardr and Brandr stood at Gauis's back ready to jump in while Zypher and Hannibal stepped up for Ebon. The air crackled with the tension in the room. Neither side would back down. Fighting blindly unto death for the leader they supported.

Dmitri grabbed Faith as she tried to step into the middle of the fray. Holding her to his chest he let out a strident whistle to gain the glaring males attention.

"Enough." He growled out. "More fighting and killing will solve nothing. Now everyone sit your asses down and shut your mouths."

Grumbles of discontent accompanied the scraping of chair legs against the floor as the six males grudgingly sat around the table.

Once the men had found some sense of calm, Dmitri allowed Faith to sit before taking his own seat. The young stood behind the mated pair along with Faith's parents, presenting a united front against the three team leaders that supported the commander and the council.

The remaining team leaders stood to the side. Waiting for information before backing either group of warriors.

Dmitri stared into Ebon's eyes. Not as a challenge but to watch for complicity. He had hope that Callum was the only one involved but it was unlikely.

"The intel for my teams last assignment was false."

Though succinct, Dmitri's statement was effective. The guilt that flashed across Ebon's face was as telling as the yelled denials of the other team leaders. Ebon knew of the councils seditious actions. Wether he was a part of them still remained to be seen.

"Explain your accusations, Dmitri." Zypher barked.

Dmitri did not want to mention Valerius unless absolutely necessary. Yes he and his followers were moving, but if at all possible it would be best if the council thought them dead.

"Our last assignment was to take out a pack that was rabid. We were told the entire pack was infected and all were to be exterminated, from the oldest to the smallest pup. Upon searching the small village, we later found no sign of infection."

"But that proves nothing. The council are not perfect. Yes, it is a disgraceful waste of life if you were truly given mistaken information. But how does that prove wrongdoing on the part of the council?" Asked Team Leader Calix.

Gaius stepped forward to address the group. He too had seen Ebon's expression and knew he would have to watch his words. Valerius's group were to be their clandestine forces and needed to be protected at all cost.

"The people who were our target were the proof. It was not just a random group. The head of the pack was my mentor, my brother. He had been a warrior up until the new council took over.

Disagreeing with the new regimes values he retired and dropped out of sight. He had proof of the councils subversive dealings. It was not an accident that his pack was chosen. They wanted to make sure he could never bear witness to their dealings during our coming out."
