I had accepted the job at Hydra because the salary was higher than in any hospital at that time. I was a single mother and needed money to grow up my son only on my own, I had left my ex husband the day he dared beating him . Every day I looked after the new born Super Soldiers, witnessed their sufferings during the mutation, trying to heal their wounds or sooth them after missions. I brought home their screams of pain which hunted my sleep and turned my dreams into scary nightmares. As much as I was able to give a better life to my son, at the same time my health was getting worse: under eye puffiness and weight loss were so evident my parents started to be concerned about it, they had begged me to look for another job, a less tiring one but I didn't want to give up on that good income.
One day I was ending my night shift, ready to go home when the chief called me in his office: he had a new assignment for me. "Please, close the door, Miss Romanoff. Let me tell you how proud I am of your commitment, you're our best nurse here at Hydra even if you joined our team only one year ago", I blushed and shyly thanked him "this is the reason why I decided you're the right one for this delicate task. You're subtle and have got the nerve, please have a seat". Curious and confused at the same time, I waited for him to reveal the mystery "You're going to be the personal nurse of the Winter Soldier. The only other one, beyond me, admitted into his cell room. Of course I'll request you a daily detailed report about his physical and psychological conditions. I'm sure you'll carry out your duties precisely and flawlessly". I was speechless, that was really a hard challenge! The Winter Soldier was like a wild animal, out of control and merciless, a grip of his metal hand was enough to kill you and turn your body into pulp. I tried to reply but my boss stopped me "I can understand how many questions and doubts are coming to your mind, no worries, I will make sure he doesn't hurt you. Brainwashing is done before carrying him back to his cell every day. He will be harmless like a quiet puppy". I nodded and agreed "great! You'll be starting from tomorrow afternoon. Here are the keys to open the door, he will be back from a mission and need some treatment".
That night I slept even less than my worst ones, I didn't know what was going to happen in my first meeting with the Winter Soldier himself but I was scared. I began my shift reading the file my boss had left me : a memorandum about my new patient. One thing was different from any other: his behavior was unpredictable. "Natasha! He is waiting for you", the voice of the head nurse echoed in the hallway.
My steps slowed down as soon as I reached his cell, when I opened the door I found him sitting on the bed, his uniform still on, his eyes lost staring into space. "Hello, nice to meet you. I am Natasha, I'll be taking care of you from today on", he didn't move or make any sound in return. I prepared whatever it took to disinfect his wounds and got closer to him: when he turned the head to look at me, I saw the steel blue in his eyes and got mesmerized by the beauty of his face, framed by his long dark hair. He was too handsome to be an assassin, but sometimes they say "the devil takes an angel's shape!" I spoke again "I need you to undress a little, I see you have been injured on chest and shoulders", the Winter Soldier was still staring at me then lifted his flesh arm. I expected to be hit but he finally answered to me "Do it yourself". It sounded like an order but he repeated "do it yourself, please", my hands moved automatically to unbuckle the straps hiding his torso "please tell me if it hurts, this antiseptic may sting a little. I'll do as softly as I can".
The view of his half naked body sent shivers down my spine: he was so beefy and smooth, perfect like a god but I realized immediately they had turned him into a robot. Marked for death. The wounds were deep but not bleeding, the power of healing given by the serum was incredible even if sometimes it needed a little help with usual methods. The Winter Soldier had his crystal eyes on me all the time, on every move I made, silently. Suddenly I found a bullet into his wrist, I was pretty sure he had not felt it, I took an hemostat to pull it out but his metal hand squeezed mine so hard that my circulation cut off "please, don't..please leave me.." I complained but he didn't stop, his jaw stiffened and the grip became even tighter, I whispered "I didn't want to hurt you! I'm here to take care of you. Please..you'll break it..".
