It was All Hollow's Eve and I had shift till 11 at the retirement home on that day: in the afternoon, I was making my round of visits on the second floor when I got into the room of Miss Fletcher "my darling Doctor Gray, I thought you were coming in costume today! I had prepared your favourite candies..." she motioned to me to come closer "would you open the first drawer in my night stand?" I did and found a little package of Salted Caramel Smarties "Was I right?" she asked me "More than right! You're so sweet, Jessica... you shouldn't have bothered!" "My darling,it's a pleasure for me,from the day my daughter passed away I have no one left and you became like a granddaughter for me". I hugged her tight and she returned "do you have time for a Halloween tale? It is short or if you can come back at the end of the shift..." "I have always time for you,my dear" I answered bending on my knees next to her wheel chair and taking her hands in mine.

"When I was young,my grandma told me that on each Halloween a special human being can be selected to meet with a dead loved one for that night only,as you know the veil between life and death disappears.A good ghost comes to the chosen one and leads him to the reunion. It's important that the dead person had not left any unfinished business". I was charmed by her words; she caressed my cheek then went on "if you were selected, which person you would like to be reunited to?" I opened my eyes wide because I already had the answer to that "my grandmother Lilian. It's been 6 years since the day she passed away.It was Halloween.I miss her so fucking much I'd give anything to speak with her only once..." Jessica squeezed my hand into hers "who knows, darling, miracles may be just round the corner" she said winking.

At 11 I punched out, outside as I walked home I found children and teens in the streets almost recognizable as everyone was wearing costumes:zombies,IT clowns, witches, ghosts and skeletons, but most of the teens were Joker and Harley Queen (the movie had just come out in theatres). All the houses and bars were decked-out with spider webs and dark canvas, Jack-o-lantern pumpkins laid on every garden and residents waited for the door bell ringing to open and answer to the "trick or treat" with any kind of ready candies.Their happy faces when someone gave them even donuts or scared if opened dressed-up like a monster were priceless.

That night I decided to take a shortcut through the graveyard,it was not empty and silent as usual because many bonfires had been lit here and there to make the Halloween mood more suggestive, many young people was around them celebrating and roasting marshmallows.I hadn't been visiting the tomb of my grandma for a couple of months, due to my working hours and night shifts, therefore I looked for it on the west wing, inside the chapel which had belonged to her family for almost half a century. It was hidden a little by the oldest Sequoia but I finally found it,I took the key from the secret crack in the cold wall and got in:the bunch of Orchids my mom had brought was almost withered and I took it out to throw away, cleaned the photo on the gravestone and caressed it "Hi Lil,long time not seen..." I said with a sad smile "this job is both a passion and a duty but each time I meet some of my patients,my mind goes to you immediately. You know, maybe what Miss Fletcher told me may be true.I'd only need to know you're fine up there and that you're proud of me". Tears started flowing down my cheeks and I wiped them with the back of my hand "Watch over me,please,I'm still hoping your advices came to keep me on the right way".

I kissed her photo and turned to get out of the chapel,I found the door half-open,maybe someone came in to visit his relatives and pushed the wrong door in the dark.I pulled it to walk outside but a raspy male voice stopped me "Sarah Gray, right?" I was afraid to look at whom was talking and took my time to answer. "Is it you Sarah Gray?" the man repeated the question again, that time I took the courage and answered "I am Sarah Gray.Who do I have the pleasure to talk to?" The shadowy figure got out under the moonlight showing his shape "I am the Winter Soldier, when I was alive they called me James". He was dressed in total black, with a cape floor-length,his hair was knotted in a man bun with a lock over the right eye and when he extended his left arm to open the door I was blinded by the sparkling of the metal it was made of. "I know what you're looking at,don't deny it.I have a vibranium arm,due to an accident in which I almost lost my life.Let's say I was lucky or maybe not that much.I'm struggling to survive in my own hell as many human beings do,even if mine is ETERNAL". He said the last word staring with a couple of beautiful crystal eyes into mine, blurred by a veil of gloom.I asked him "Thank you for telling this to me.Maybe you won't accept an « I'm sorry»..." he smiled "well,I can accept it from a pretty human girl today. It doesn't happen every day, therefore thank you,I appreciate it". We shut up for a moment then I spoke again "I've been chosen to escort you to the meeting.I had a special passport to Heaven as I am in Purgatory, only for tonight. If you like to follow me..." I was astonished "wait wait...What are you talking about?"

He showed his open vibranium hand "if you don't want to get lost along the way, take it!Sorry,it's a bit cold..." "Before I do please explain:why do I have to go with you?" James took a deep breath "I thought you were aware of the legend,Miss Fletcher told you about it.Well, you're The One this year.Congratulations!" My legs shivered while I stifled a scream and tears came to my eyes after those words "Am I... Am I really...Going to meet Grandma Lilian?" The Winter Soldier squeezed my hand gently as his heart melted "Of course, you're not dreaming. That «Someone» up there knew about your special bond and decided to make the miracle happen", I took his and we got out of the Chapel in the dark night.

It was weird because the graveyard was suddenly quiet, there was no one nearby anymore while we went towards the little bridge over the river and stopped before entering into the woods "be careful and keep on walking.Whatever you'll see around. We should arrive at the Witch Rocks' circle, this is our starting point". Shadows of every shape stared at me showing up and disappearing,I didn't know if they were real or stuffs in my head but one got my attention "don't go.You'll never come back", that apparition had the shape of my grandma, stretching out her arms towards me,her voice was mesmerizing and filled my eyes so much that I was going to run and hug her but James shouted "No!It's a Will-o'-the-wisp and it would take you straight to Hell". I moved backwards and kept up with James "here we are.Give me your ring" he pointed to the wedding ring of my grandma that I held on my right hand "it is the only physical memory I have from her, please don't take it away..." James kissed the palm of my hand before pulling the ring off, between his thumb and forefinger "it is needed only to make contact with the Afterworld, don't worry it'll be returned to you immediately. He raised both arms holding it as it was a host and him a priest "Holy Spirits of the beloved deceased, rise back and you,the Magnificent, open the veil to let those souls join...in the Middle Land". A huge golden halo enveloped him followed by a rain of light that trained on me,then we were almost carried off by a violent wind "keep your feet firmly on the ground!" I had no hold except his vibranium arm thus I grabbed it strongly.
