Suddenly, the hall fell silent.
What does this mean, the purification isn't working? The people were stunned, but it was Tyriel who's more baffled than anyone else.
She was the only one of them who could purify, and her powers had proven useless in front of everyone.
"Uh, uh, uh..."
Tyriel stammered, at a loss for words. The temple officials who had rushed to make her a saint were also at a loss for words.
'Now it's my turn.'
I stood up quietly, as had been arranged, and looked at Reynos.
He shook his head, seemingly unable to speak, and then opened his mouth.
"Do you have something to say, Little Marquis?"
Instantly, all eyes were on me. I felt the stares and spoke solemnly.
"Yes, I have something to say about this case."
My voice was not loud, but it was enough to convey my intentions. I paused slightly, hoping to heighten the mood, and when their frustrated stares reached a crescendo, I continued in a commanding voice.
"In fact, I have recently received a divine favor, and I know why the Second Prince has become the way he is. I'm afraid, His Highness the Second Prince-"
Having said this, I paused once more, and smiled inwardly at the high priests gathered in the pews, who watched me with bemused eyes.
They had thought of using me, but they hadn't expected me to announce that I was favored by God.
Tearing my gaze away from them, I finished.
"-has earned the wrath of God."
"...!"
"The wrath of God?"
"His Imperial Highness the Second Prince?"
A murmur erupted from the crowd at the sheer power of the words.
The Argentime Empire had always been a highly religious nation. Despite the corruption of the temple, the people still believed in their God.
Under such circumstances, it must have been a shock to them to hear that their prince, of all people, had incurred the wrath of God.
I spoke quickly before they could recover from their shock and start fussing again.
"Not long ago, we received a tip-off from the temple that someone had tampered with the medicines we were sending to His Highness the Crown Prince."
"What!"
"What an insolent thing to say?!"
Excited high priests jumped to their feet and shouted. Unlike the priests now standing on the field, they were unaware of the Pope's sword.
I shrugged them off and began to descend into the arena, adding a sly aside.
"And I have also heard that the Second Prince, though he knew of it, did not tell you, but stood idly by."
"What words are those, Little Marquis Lavirins!"
A shrill voice cut through the air. I turned to see the Queen glaring at me, her face pale as death.
"It doesn't make sense that they tampered with the Crown Prince's medicine in the temple, but you dare to involve the second prince? The Little Marquis should know better than anyone how great the sin of disrespecting the imperial family is!"
