Clarke was curled up on the far side of the bed when the soft knock sounded on her door a short while later."Come in." She called out sleepily. It was still very early in the afternoon, but her body was trying to shut itself down from the emotional toll of the morning. It had become her coping mechanism for stress during her time in the cave.
She doubted whether Lexa would actually want to see her after how harshly she kicked her out that morning. She half-expected it to be Octavia or Raven again, but her eyes flutter open when she feels someone come around and kneel down beside the bed, and she smiles weakly when she opens her eyes to see crystal green staring back at her.
"You came." Clarke sighs contently.
Lexa tilts her head to match Clarke's angle and brushes the blonde's hair back from the side of her face, "You called."
"I'm sorry I freaked out on you." Clarke mumbles, bunching the furs tightly under her chin.
Lexa's eyes are impossibly soft, so impossibly kind for someone in her position, "You're not allowed to say those words anymore, Niron."
Clarke presses her face into the pillow, before whispering, "I didn't want you to see what she did to me."
Lexa continues stroking Clarke's hair back on the side of her head, "I'm so sorry I wasn't there sooner Clarke. I didn't know you were gone. I could have saved you before any of it..." Her voice cracks a little and Clarke reaches up to take Lexa's hand into her own and settling them on the edge of the bed.
"No, you couldn't have. It was already happening by then. Even if you'd known right away." There's a quick flash of pain in Lexa's eyes hearing it, and Clarke shuts her own to try and stop the tears wanting to leak out.
Clarke hated that she saw Luna's logic. Who's to say what the right choice really was, one person over thousands? The fate of two entire groups of people versus just her own? She was nobody in the grand scheme of things. Lexa was the one with a higher purpose, with the real power to create a better world. A peaceful world. She was born into it for better or worse.
"I talked to Luna." Clarke said softly, and Lexa's eyes ignited.
Lexa's tone is sharp, "She came here?" But Clarke squeezes Lexa's fingers that are threaded over hers.
"Don't be mad at her, I needed to know. Why didn't you tell me yourself?"
"I don't know," Lexa replies, "It still hurts to think how many extra days you shouldn't have had to be in there, and it was because of her."
"Your people needed you." The blonde says, "It would have been an impossible choice, one that would have broken you, whether you admit it or not. Even if you'd known, you couldn't have put me over thousands that were depending on you to make peace with my people."
