They take in the golden hour sitting on the floor against the window. Clarke leans back against Lexa's chest, with Lexa's arms draped loosely around Clarke's torso, her chin resting on Clarke's shoulder. The soft light pours into the room, giving the room an extra warm tint.
It's been mostly silence, the girls simply relishing being so close to each other. Lexa constantly nuzzles into the crook of Clarke's neck, and at first Clarke had to fight the urge to stiffen up with Lexa moving along her neck, but focused on the warmth coating her skin, like being wrapped in a blanket after being out in a storm but it was Lexa. She was wrapped up in Lexa and didn't want to ever move again.
Neither girls' mind could stay calm for long though. Clarke fidgeted, her breaths got shallow and before she could even open her mouth Lexa hummed in her ear,
"Don't even think about apologizing."
Clarke leans her head into Lexa's, who plants a soft kiss behind her ear, "What is it Niron?"
"I know it wasn't your fault Lexa." Clarke says softly, "And I don't want to blame you...it just...it still doesn't make any of this any easier."
Lexa loosens her grip slightly, but Clarke is quick to grab her hands, interlacing their fingers.
"Please..." She pulls Lexa's arms back snuggly around herself, "I just...I can't help that I still see it, everywhere. It's like I can't escape it. Every time I walk down the hallway outside, it's so dark the walls look like... they look like..." She trails off, feeling the emotion building and Lexa gives her a slight squeeze, nuzzling into the back of her head so she knows she understands.
"It's just...it's not there, until it is. And then it's everywhere. All at once. Does that make sense?"
"Would you like a room closer to the elevator? You won't have to walk down a long hallway." Lexa asks.
"No – that's not...ugh" Clarke sighs playfully, "It's adorable that you just want to fix everything." She presses back into Lexa, earning a tighter hold from the commander, before her voice drops to a whimper.
"I'm just not sure you can fix me, Lex."
Lexa keeps her head leaned against the side of Clarke's face. The one question she can't shake, the one question she was scared to ask, stayed on her tongue, reaching out to form on her lips.
She shouldn't. It's not for her to ask. Maybe it's not for her to even know, ever. Not unless Clarke wanted her to.
Yet it escaped like a gust of wind, reluctantly as an exhale, softer than a whisper.
"What did she do to you love?"
The blonde crumples forward and Lexa braces Clarke against herself, not letting her go.
"Lex..." Clarke twists in Lexa's lap so that she's sideways, and Lexa cradles her against her chest.
"I'm sorry Clarke I shouldn't have asked."
