It's been a few days since Kyubey disappeared. Mia and I are still conflicted. I'm just waiting until Kyubey comes back before I make my final decision. I don't know how Mia feels. Our worlds have been turned upside down and then flipped again. Meanwhile, I've been reading over this research paper. I'm not sure how Kyubey managed to read it so fast. Maybe it's because he understands it a lot better than I do. I have to look up words and concepts on my phone to get an understanding of things. Still, when I actually do understand it, it becomes even cooler... and scarier. Today, I'm kind of distracted by Mia watching TV in the common room, so every now and then, I look up to see what's going on. It looks like some sort of rom-com, and even Mia is barely paying attention to it.

As I'm looking down at a graph, a white paw suddenly blocks it from my view. I look up slightly to see a pair of red eyes looking back at me.

"Kyubey?" I say.

"Incubator?" Mia shoots up from the couch.

"I'm back, and I'm afraid I don't have good news." I know Kyubey can be the serious type, but he sounds different, like a serious, serious.

"What is it?" I ask. For the first time since I've interacted with Kyubey, he breaks eye contact before talking. What is up with him? Did he get replaced by an imposter or something?

"The magical girl system, entropy, it's all fake," Kyubey says. There's a pause as if Kyubey is watching our reactions. To be honest, I don't really understand, and I can see the confusion form on Mia's face as well. "The magical girl system was implemented to prevent entropy. That was true at the start, but now, there is no way to stop entropy. It will happen no matter what, and the more we try to prevent it, the faster it happens."

"So, then, what's the point of the magical girl system?" Mia asks.

"To prevent humanity from advancing its civilisation from advancing," Kyubey says.

"But that doesn't make sense. Hasn't the magical girl system been in place for hundreds of years?" Mia asks.

"It's been in place for almost three millennia," Kyubey replies. "Human tenacity was underestimated by my masters." I don't know what to say. It's hard to process all of this. There's a long silence between all of us.

"What now?" I finally say.

"We get rid of the magical girl system," Kyubey says. Right, Like that's going to be easy to do.

"How do we do that?" I ask.

"There are multiple fail-safes in the system, one of which is the ability to take away wishes from magical girls if they wish to do so. This has never been implemented in any way for the purposes of collecting energy but now that, that's no longer the case, we can implement it to a much wider area."

"That just gets rid of magical girls. What about witches?" Mia asks.

"Another fail-safe. If there are no magical girls on Earth, witches will simply evaporate into magic." Kyubey replies.

"What if there are magical girls who don't want that?" Mia asks.

"If there's simply one or two, then we can just wait until the fall in battle," Kyubey says coldly. "But, if there are many magical girls who don't want that, well, we'll have to somehow convince them. The contract states that we can't forcibly take wishes away from magical girls."

"I'd like to read this contract one of these days." I sigh.

"So, what will you do?" Kyubey asks. I sit back on the couch and think. I did enjoy being a magical girl. I liked the idea of being able to help people, but continuing to be a magical girl will almost certainly lead to more suffering. Besides, is my wish even worth all that? Is my wish worth turning into a witch?
