Chapter 7
Finding the key
Shiloh Cooper
Everybody watched each other for a few seconds before Langden stood up and all eyes turned to him.
“I guess we should start searching,” he said, looking around the table to see if anybody objected.
“Where do we start?” Brady asked eagerly, causing Noriko to giggle beside him.
“Well, I think we should start downstairs and then work our way up, we can all search our own rooms, we are bound to find it if we do this properly,” he replied, looking deep in thought.
“Sounds fine to me,” Brady said as he got up from his chair “I’m taking the living room.”
One by one everybody got up and started searching, everybody except for Diago who looked like he wanted to break something. I wanted to ask him if something was wrong but to be completely honest I was too afraid to talk to him so I left him standing there and walked off towards the kitchen to try and help find the key.
The kitchen was way too crowded so I went to the living room which was halfway overturned by Brady, Noriko, Gemma and Sage. I doubted that they needed my help so I headed to the bathroom and was pleased when I found nobody there.
I closed the door behind me and locked it so that nobody would disturb me. I started in the corner and made my way around checking each and every possible place where the key could be. We needed to find the key and fast, I knew how hungry kids get so I’m sure it can only be worse when it came to teenage boys.
The medicine cabinet was the last place I checked, it was stocked with a few toothbrushes, two glasses and a hair brush. It looked used and I could see a few blonde hair tangled in the bristles. I thought it weird but didn’t pay much attention to it, maybe one of the girls hid in there on their way to the dining room this morning.
I took another look in all the cupboards, making sure I didn’t miss the key and hoping desperately to find some toothpaste. After searching the entire bathroom and coming up empty handed I left and went into the living room to see if they had any luck. Nobody was in there anymore so I headed back to the kitchen where I found Tailynn and Lainey standing around.
“I take it nobody has found anything yet?” I asked the two of them.
“No, it’s hopeless, how are we supposed to find a key in this house? It’s huge” Tailynn answered, looking irritated by the whole situation.
“Well, we don’t really have much of a choice. We have to find the key or we are going to starve to death,” I replied, causing both of them to look at me with new found concern in their eyes.
“Don’t worry, we’ll find it,” I stated but I could tell that it didn’t help much.
“Yeah, when we’re all dead,” Tailynn said sarcastically. I ignored her and asked what I really wanted to know.
“Did you guys search the entire kitchen?”
“Yes, it’s not here,” Lainey answered, speaking up for the first time, she seemed a bit more rational the Tailynn.
“Ok, why don’t you two go search your room then?” I suggested and to my surprise they both agreed without any argument.
I took a deep breath and focused at the job at hand. I knew for a fact that the key wasn’t in the bathroom and although I didn’t trust Tailynn and Lainey that they searched the whole kitchen I would have to take their word for it, I couldn’t search the entire house on my own after all. The living room was turned over so I’m sure it wasn’t there which only left the dining room and playroom downstairs. I headed to the dining room first since it was the closest and found Diago searching through some of the china cabinets.
