Chapter 27

Death by chocolate

Brady Garcia

Both Lainey and I stared at Sage as she spat out her chocolate. The expression on her face telling us that there was something very wrong. She started choking and Lainey patted her on her back, trying to help her but it didn’t do a thing. She just kept on choking until she was actually turning blue in the face.

I had no idea what to do but I was busy getting up and moving over to her to try and help when something really disgusting happened. Little wholes started opening all over her exposed body and black rotten chocolate was pouring out. I grabbed a hold of Lainey who was sitting next to her in shock and pulled her to her feet. We slowly backed away from Sage, not one of us able to take our eyes off of her as her eyes popped out from the force of the rotting stuff running out of her body. Her eyes hung by veins from her head as she fell face forward onto the ground.

“Come on,” Lainey said pulling on my arm, looking like she was going to throw up at any moment.

“Yeah, I’m coming,” I replied, following her down the hallway as I tried to force the sight of Sage’s eyes popping out of her head from my mind.

Lainey Carter

I threw up all over the stairs as the thing in my stomach went crazy. Brady complained that I had to hurry up but waited until I was done and then helped me to the kitchen. By the time we got there Bladen and Langden had taken apart the kitchen cupboard and were trying to get the locks from the door. Gemma was still cleaning although the place was spotless. Tailynn stood staring at them with her empty eyes as they worked and Shiloh was still sitting where she was when we had left.

Brady helped me to the floor against the wall and walked over to Langden to help them.

“Where is Sage?” Langden asked, looking at me wearily. I didn’t have the strength to answer so I just shook my head. I saw the look on his face change to one of desperation as he took a hold of the last lock and started smashing with a hammer.

My stomach had grown some more since this morning. I didn’t know much about pregnancy but I was sure it was bigger than a woman’s who was nine months pregnant. The thing moved violently causing my body to twitch and shiver as I threw up beside me again.

“That’s disgusting,” Tailynn said, watching me from the other side of the room while Gemma gathered her bucket and cloth and started walking over to me. She bent down next to me as if I wasn’t even there and started cleaning the mess. I didn’t bother replying to Tailynn’s comment, I knew it was disgusting but there was nothing I could do about it. I also knew that this thing was killing me from the inside.

“Got it!” Langden shouted triumphantly as he pulled the last lock from the door and pushed it open. It looked dark inside from where I was sitting but I didn’t bother getting up to look. I was in no position to go exploring anyway, I could barely walk. The cramps, twitching and nausea was getting worse by the second.

“We don’t have time to waste,” Tailynn said, walking towards the door and peering inside.

“You are right, is anybody coming with?” Langden asked, turning to face us.

“Yea, I want to come,” Brady said, looking at me with and expression that said he was sorry. I didn’t blame him for going, if I could I would have taken the chance as well.

“Let me go in first to make sure it is ok,” Langden said to Brady and Tailynn. Brady agreed happily, not caring about impressing anybody.

“Whatever, just go already,” Tailynn stated, still sounding ridiculously calm.

“I’ll send help if we get out,” Langden said and then stepped into the darkness. We all looked after him, waiting for him to say something. It took a few seconds before he said anything.

“It looks ok, come on down,” he yelled, sounding far away.

“I’m going,” Tailynn said but as she moved forward the door slammed shut in her face and we heard a loud thump from inside the basement. She tried the knob and when it didn’t work she turned away from the door and walked out of the kitchen, nobody bothered following her.

Brady swore out loud and kicked the door, causing him to fall to the ground and grab his ankle.

“Fuck, I think I broke it!” he complained.

“I’ve got some bandaged in the medical kit, I’ll go fetch it,” Shiloh said as she pushed herself up against the wall.

“I’ll come with,” Bladen said, walking across the room and taking her hand in his. They left the kitchen without another word.

“I’m going to go clean the living room,” Gemma stated as she filled her bucket with clean water.

Not me or Brady tried to stop her, what was the point in it? She had obviously lost it and there was nothing we could do to protect her anyway, we were all screwed. A few minutes later Shiloh and Bladen returned with the medical kit and Shiloh bandaged up Brady’s leg, handing him some pain pills.

“Can I have some of those?” I asked, willing to do anything for the pain to go away.

“Of course,” Shiloh replied as she got up from where she was sitting. She filled a glass with water and handed it to me with two of the pills. I took them from her thankfully and threw them in my mouth while taking a sip of water. As soon as they hit my stomach everything came up again and I threw up all over the clean floor.

Shiloh, Bladen and Brady just stared at me and I didn’t blame them, there was nothing they could do for me after all.

“Where did Gemma go?” Shiloh asked, breaking the silence.

“She said she was going to clean the living room,” Brady answered, not sounding like he really cared. Shiloh shook her head but made no attempt to go see what she was doing.

Bladen pulled Shiloh into his arms and we all just stayed there, staring at each other for a few minutes. My insides were killing me and I let out a painful scream as something twisted inside of me.

“I think I should go to my room,” I said trying to get up. The floor was getting very uncomfortable and to be quite honest I had a feeling that the baby was going to come soon. I had no idea what to expect but I knew it wasn’t going to be nice. Shiloh stepped out of Bladen’s arms and helped me to my feet. I could tell that she felt sorry for me but I could also see in her eyes that she was terrified of what was inside of me.

“It’s ok, I want to be alone,” I said, trying to make her feel better. I didn’t really want to be alone but it’s not like there was anything she could do for me. She nodded her head and moved back into Bladen’s arms.
