Teen Life
Chapter 30
Escape
Shiloh Cooper
We ran up the stairs to the second floor, hoping that the thing was still in Tailynn’s room but we weren’t so lucky. As we passed the first floor the thing was standing outside the, licking the floor where Lainey had vomited. It noticed us immediately and came storming towards us. We didn’t hesitate as we ran up the next flight of stairs as fast as we could and dawn the hall with the thing following close behind.
Bladen couldn’t run as fast as me with his leg but I didn’t run away from him, I wouldn’t leave him no matter what happened. When we reached the end of the hall Bladen pointed up at the attic door and without a word lifted me onto his shoulders. I knew this must have been difficult for him but since it was a matter of life and death I didn’t object. I grabbed a hold of the door handle and pulled it down, causing an old rotten ladder to fall down. Since I was already half way up I grabbed a hold of the ladder and pulled myself up into the attic. I watched the demonic baby closing in on us as Bladen grabbed a hold of the ladder and started pulling himself up. He was almost at the top when the thing reached the ladder and jumped up, grabbing a hold of his leg.
He let out a scream as its teeth sank into his prosthetic leg. For a moment I found myself wondering why it seemed like he was in pane if the thing had only bitten his false leg but then I realized what had happened. It was strong and had managed to pull his false leg off, it fell to the ground holding the prosthetic leg in its mouth, looking confused.
“Come on!” I yelled, pulling Bladen into the attic. Once he was in I shut the door and locked it with a latch.
“Pull some stuff onto it,” Bladen said and I could hear that he was in pain. I wanted to look how bad he was hurt but I knew he was right, I had to make sure that the demon baby couldn’t get in first.
I quickly looked around the room and noticed that it was packed with old furniture. It was all dusty but I couldn’t care less about getting dirty at the moment. I ran towards the nearest thing which was a dresser and pulled it over the door but I didn’t stop there. I continued pulling pieces of furniture over the door and stacking them onto each other until I was out of breath and sure that it was as good as I could get it.
When I was done I ran over to where Bladen was sitting and fell down in front of him. There was a puddle of blood surrounding his stump leg, causing my heart to beat even faster. I pulled his ripped pants away and saw that the thing had pulled the prosthetic leg as well as the steel brackets that went through Bladen’s leg to hold it in place right out. There was a huge gash where it had been torn and blood was streaming out.
“We have to stop the bleeding,” I said desperately as I pulled my shirt off and ripped it down the centre. I tied it above his knee, hoping that it would work and to my relief the blood flow started slowing.
“We have to get out of here,” Bladen said and by the sound of his voice I could hear that he was in pain.
“Ok, I’ll look for a way out,” I replied, not really expecting to find anything. I ran through the room and when I didn’t find any exit except for the door we came in through I went to the window and tried to push it open. To my surprise it opened and a feeling of hope flooded my body. If we could get out of here everything would be ok.
“The window opened,” I yelled, peering out. It looked over the small front yard, the stage, the long road that ran past the house and over to the other side that consisted of a big field and some more forest.
There was one problem thought, how on earth were we going to get down from so high up? I looked at the wall and noticed that there was a gutter running all the way down. If I was careful I could climb down it but how was Bladen going to get down?
“Come on, we have to do this quickly,” I yelled as I ran back over to where Bladen was sitting. I helped him up and over to the window where he peered outside and then fell down against the wall.
“There is no way I can climb down, you should go, you can get help and send them back for me,” he said, knowing very well that by the time help arrived he would be dead whether he bled to death or that thing found a way into the attic.
“No way, there has to be some rope around here,” I said, running to the back of the room where I had seen some tool kits. Bladen moaned in disagreement but there was no way I was giving him his way. I found some rope and carried it over to where he was sitting.
“Do you know how to tie a proper knot?” I asked, handing the rope to him.
“I guess we are going to find out,” he replied, chuckling and I couldn’t help but return his smile. He tied the ropes together and handed them back to me.
“You should find something to tie it to so it will be easier,” he said as he pulled himself up so that he was standing on his one leg.
“Ok,” I mumbled, looking around and finding an old cupboard. It looked heavy but luckily it was close by and should be able to carry his weight. It took me a few minutes to pull it up to the window and by the time it was close enough I was so tired I could barely stand.
Bladen helped me tie the rope around the cupboard and then around his body. It didn’t look to comfortable but it was better than staying up here and being eaten by a baby demon. I helped him out of the window and with the cupboard as support I helped him down the wall. He was a few feet from the top when the rope snapped and he fell to the ground. I heard a pained moan escape his throat when he hit the floor but then he pulled himself into a sitting position and looked up at me.
“Come on, get out of there!” he yelled at me and I didn’t let him wait on me. I threw my legs out of the window, grabbed a hold of the gutter and made my way down to him. I almost lost my footing twice but somehow I managed to get down.
Once we were both on solid ground I helped Bladen up and we started making our way to the main gate as fast as we could. We were almost half way there when a car came crashing through the gate.
“Get in!” A guy yelled at us from inside. Hearing his voice once again filled me with hope that we might get away from this place. I helped Bladen to the car and we both got into the back. The guy reversed out of the yard and onto the road, not even bothering to wait for us to close the door. He took off as fast as the car allowed him and we watched the house disappear into the distance as Bladen pulled me close and wrapped his arms around me.
