Chapter 8

Sage found the key to the storeroom and I have to admit that I was relieved. It didn’t matter to me who found it, I was just grateful that I could stop searching. We all headed down to the storeroom, Rafeal taking the lead. I could tell that he was really getting on some of the kids nerves and I had no doubt that one of the guys were going to beat him up in the near future.
When we got to the storeroom Sage handed the key to Langden. I’m not sure why she did it but it got Rafeal all red in the face so it was worth it. Langden took the key from her with a smile on his face and unlocked the door. The little room was dark inside so we had to switch the lights on. There was no window in this room, it was just filled with empty racks from the floor to the roof.
Langden took the envelope and pen that was lying on one of the racks and we all headed back to the dining room where we could look at it.
Once everybody was seated Langden opened the envelope and pulled out a bunch of papers.
“This looks like our points,” he said, handing one of the sheets to Gemma who was sitting next to him. “And this must be the grocery list the voice was talking about,” he continued as he scanned the front page of the list.
“It looks like we all started with twenty points,” Gemma said passing the paper to Brady who was next to her. When everybody had looked at the paper holding our points we decided that it was time to get some food. The sun was already starting to set in the distance behind the forest that surrounded the house and we haven’t had a single bite to eat yet.
Ordering the food wasn’t very difficult, that is after everybody fought about what they wanted.
“Remember, whatever we order have to last us the whole week,” Shiloh said, being all rational in the chaos.
“Shiloh’s right, don’t just think about now or we are all going to be starving by the end of the week,” Rafeal agreed, taking a hold of the list and starting to look through it.

All in all we had a hundred and twenty points for the week. The voice had said that points will be deducted for Rafeal and Gemma being late but I suppose that will come off of next week. My stomach was rumbling non stop now and I wish everybody would just agree so that we could get some food.
After lots of debating we finally decided what we wanted to order and Rafeal started ticking off the items. We ordered the essentials like salt, oil, sugar, milk, coffee, bread and cereal first. Then we continued by ordering rice, potatoes, meat, some canned food and some eggs and peanut butter and jelly for the bread. We were almost out of points so that is about all the food we could get if we still wanted toilet paper, toothepaste, soap, shampoo and dishwashing liquid. This is not the kind of things that we were thinking of but since they were on the list we realized that we were going to need them.
Once we used up all our points we passed the list around so that everybody could fill in their special request at the bottom. By the time the list got to me some of the others had already filled it in and I quickly scanned it to see what they were asking for, I couldn’t help it, I was curious. Diago had asked for a bottle of Brand,y claiming that he is eighteen and that it was his right. Storm asked for his skateboard, Bladen asked for some specially named pain pills and Tailynn had asked if they could please supply all of us with some roll on and deodorant. I wasn’t sure what to ask for but figured everybody was really hungry at this point so I asked for pizza and soda for all of us and passed the list to Noriko who was sitting next to me. She looked at the page hesitantly and then scribbled that she would like some candy bars. I chuckled at her request, causing her to blush.

When we were done Langden took the list back to the storeroom and then returned to the dining room where we were told to wait.
“Now that you have found the key we are going to ask that it be kept in a safe place, if you lose it we won’t be replacing it,” came the voice over the loudspeaker. “We have received your grocery list and is busy processing it. You can all go ahead and continue with your day but do not go into the storeroom until you are told to,” the voice said and then disappeared, leaving us wondering how long it will be until we got our food.
“Where are we going to put the key?” I asked, hoping that this wasn’t going to cause another argument.
“I think it should be placed somewhere safe but where we can all have access to it,” Langden answered, looking for agreement around the table. Everybody agreed, a few reluctantly but everybody had to admit that it was the most logical thing to do.
“Where?” I asked, looking at Langden. He scanned the room and then walked over to one of the china cabinets which I think was more for decoration then actual use.
“Right here,” he answered, opening a small drawer at the bottom beneath the big glass ones. He placed the key in the drawer and closed it. I could tell that he was reluctant leaving it there but it’s not like he could keep it with him, that would just cause a lot of arguments.
