Chapter 15

Shattered mirror

Tailynn Green

I ran into the house with everybody else but nobody seemed to be paying much attention to me. They all think that I’m crazy now. I’m not crazy, I know what I saw, it wasn’t some prank or a figment of my imagination. It was real. If it was just the thing in the mirror then maybe I would have believed that it could have been a prank, but the feeling of pure evil that came with it couldn’t have been faked. The feeling has been following me around ever since I saw it.

I tried ignoring it but tonight it was stronger than ever, something was going to happen tonight and it was going to be horrible.

It took Shiloh and Bladen a while to come inside but as soon as they entered the kitchen Langden shut the door behind them and locked it. Langden was one of the contestants that actually believed me. He didn’t come right out and say it but I could see it in his eyes. I had to warn them that something bad was going to happen. The only problem was getting the rest of them to believe me.

I considered my options and decided that my best option would be to tell Langden. Everybody seemed to like him and maybe he would take me seriously. Once everybody had gone in their own directions I set off in search of him. I found him in the dining room, sitting at the table looking worried.

“You can feel it too,” I stated, taking a seat opposite him. He didn’t say anything, he just shook his head in agreement.

“What are we going to do?” I asked, feeling even more frightened now that he had confirmed my suspicions.

“I don’t know. I mean we are talking about ghosts here, evil spirits. Nobody is going to believe us and even if they do, what can we do about it?” he asked, looking unsure for the first time since he entered the house.

“I don’t know,” I replied, feeling helpless. There was nothing we could do except to wait and see what happened.

After a while of just sitting there staring at each other I got up and headed upstairs. They always say a person should face their fears so I figured I’ll give it a go. I was scared shitless but it felt like I had to do it.

I went to the bathroom where I had seen the thing in the mirror and took a deep breath before entering. I walked over to the basin, gripping it with my hands and looked up into the mirror. I didn’t see anything except for my own reflection staring back at me but I could feel its presence here more than anywhere else in the house. It was like it was right there in the room with me. It was like it was staring at me but I couldn’t see it.

“What the fuck are you doing?” I heard a voice ask and turned my head towards the bathroom door to see Diago standing there looking amused.

“It’s here, I can feel it,” I answered, way too nervous to make up excuses.

“This is fucken crazy, there’s nothing here!” He yelled as he walked into the bathroom and came to a stop next to me.

“It’s here, it’s in the mirror,” I said again, feeling its presence grow stronger by the second.

“I’ve got a solution to your problem,” Daigo stated, grabbing the little dustbin that was standing next to the basin and striking the mirror with it.

The mirror cracked into a million little pieces and shattered to the ground. For a second I thought it had worked as the evil presence seemed to be fading but then it grew stronger and stronger until I could feel it everywhere around me.

“Fuck,” Diago whispered as his eyes moved from the shattered glass on the floor to mine. I could tell he was feeling it too.

“What happened?” I heard Gemma ask and looked from Diago to her. Behind her stood Sage, Noriko and Brady, looking worriedly at the scene in front of them. As they spoke I felt the presence untangle from around me, it didn’t disappear completely but it returned to how it was before.

“I fixed her problem,” Diago said, turning to face them.

“By breaking the mirror?” Gemma asked in disbelief.

“Yes, now she can stop worrying, the boogeyman is gone,” he answered as he pushed pass them and disappeared.

“Are you ok? Did he hurt you?” Gemma asked as she rushed towards me.

“No, he just broke the mirror,” I replied, looking down at the glass.

“Ok, why don’t you go get some rest, I’ll clean this up,” she suggested and I was too exhausted to object.

“Thank you,” I whispered as I stepped passed her and left the bathroom. Everybody was standing in the hall whispering and looking at me. I couldn’t hear what they were saying and I honestly couldn’t care at the moment. They didn’t believe me but I had the feeling that they would be proven wrong very soon.

The whole ghost thing was irritating the shit out of me so I figured I would help Tailynn get over it. The only problem is that I felt the evil that came out of the mirror when I broke it. It filled the bathroom like an invisible cloud. It grew thicker and thicker around me until I felt completely consumed by it. It was at that point that Gemma arrived and I made my escape. I needed to get away from that bathroom as fast as I could but I had this strange feeling that it was too late.

As I made my way to my room I could feel the evil that I unleashed following me, clinging to my every move. I slammed the door shut behind me and fell down on my bed as my stomach started spinning unnaturally. I bent over in pain and vomited on the floor.
