I look at Grayson who has a wide grin as he's watching a show on our TV, my feet laid on his lap. My siblings sat on the ground as they laughed along with him. I didn't believe what Jace had told me the night before, I didn't want to. I steal glances at Grayson every now and then, how could I ever doubt him? I knew Jace just wanted me to believe something that wasn't real. I had to believe that, but I can't help but wonder about the possibilities. I hated myself for doubting him. The thing is, some made sense. "Grayson," I called out. He turns to look at me with a raised eyebrow. "Do you remember when you had that almost accident? The one you said you almost hit the car?"
He furrowed his eyebrows, "I'm not sure. It was probably freshman year." I let out a sigh of relief because it didn't correlate, but the tears started falling. Grayson instantly scoots me forward to sit on his lap. He moves my hair back and rubs my back in a comforting manner. He grabs his jacket sleeve and begins wiping my tears away, but my guilt is so strong that the tears keep flowing. "Strawberry, what's wrong?" he coos in my ear.
I look up to meet his hazy eyes and mumble out, "I doubted you." He looks taken aback as I keep explaining, "Jace had put this idea that you were the one who could have caused our accident. I'm not sure why I believed it." I start shaking my head, "I'm sorry Grayson."
He smiles. I blink because I can't understand how he could just smile after what I told him. I had become someone else in his life who didn't trust him. That's when he looks at me and laughs. I pout and find myself punching him. "Ouch," is all he says but continues his laughter. I can't help but glare at him. When it finally dies down, he looks at me with such tender eyes, my knees begging to weaken. "I would have believed him too. He's a master manipulator, Strawberry. He gets results, but he uses people too."
"Like all the times he used you?"
"And I let him," Grayson nods.
Now I quietly ask, "you never said what the envelope had."
Grayson's eyes darkened for a moment before he shrugged, "nothing important. He told me that the guy who was hired to do the job had gotten caught. That's why all the charges on my mom disappeared. Apparently, my uncle had planned to pin it on my mom but since she had been there that night, he double-crossed the guy and sent him to jail. I don't know much, but my mom has met him. Every time he denies helping to put my uncle in jail."
I blink and say slowly, "That's- a lot."
"Yeah. Also, turns out this was not the first night he had tried to kill him. Something about how he had tried once before, about 3 years before actually, but something went wrong that night so he couldn't."
"Wow. Jace got you all that information?"
Grayson tilts his head to the side, "I told you he was good at getting results."
"What are we going to do?" I ask Grayson.
He smiles at me, "we aren't going to do anything. My uncle can fight all he wants but I'm getting it when I turn 18 and he can't take it away. My dad made sure of it. Also, my mom promised to keep trying to get the guy to cooperate, so we can send my uncle to jail."
"Really?"
"Yes," he tells me.
I wrap my arms around him, "Grayson I'm glad your uncle can't take the business from you. I also know that your mom will get the guy on our side."
He puts a hand on my neck and leans me forward for a kiss. He then leans his head on mine and nods his head. "Just stay by my side and I can handle anything."
"I feel the same way," I tell him.
Then there is a knock on the door. I go over and open it to a mascara-stained Gina, who wears a fancy red dress. Her hair was done in a bun, but instead of a smile adorning her face, tears kept falling. "Gina, are you okay?" I ask her as I pull her in for a hug.
She keeps crying into my shoulder, until she finally wheezes out, "he was using me, Amelia. You should have seen how he talked about me to his friends." Her knees buckle and she kneels down, me along with her. "He made me feel so small, all I could do was run away."
"What?" I ask, taken aback.
"Jace wasn't wrong. I went to a party and was the only one overdressed, but I was there for him. I could hear the whispers and then I saw the messages. One of his friends started hitting on me, and showed them to me." Her tears begin to start again, "one said- 'you guys can have her when I'm done."
That's when the anger bubbles over. "Gina," I say sternly. She looks up at me. Gina, the one who would never back down from a fight and has always had my back, was reduced to a puddle of tears because of a disgusting asshole. I wipe away her tears and say, "lead the way."
Grayson rides behind us as I finally reach the house party. I hold up the bat on my shoulder and nod toward Gina, "which one is this asshole's car?" Gina nods toward a bright red Ferrari, still clutching her jacket closer to her.
I smirk, "perfect," I say. I grab the bat and swing it against the side mirror. The alarm starts instantly. I go for the front window and begin to bash it in. I continue my assault on the car until I hear a voice.
"What the hell, bitch," he says. I turn to look at a handsome guy with a chiseled jaw and blue eyes with blonde hair. He was dressed in jeans and a black t-shirt, a beer in his hands. Ugh, he didn't even bother dressing up for her.
"Was he talking to me?" I say rhetorically with a sadistic look on my face as I climb on top of the car.
"Get the fuck off my car, bitch," he says again. By now, a group of his friends have come out with wide eyes as they watch the show.
I slam the bat on the hood of the car as hard as I can. "Bitch isn't a nice word, and what you did to my best friend wasn't very good either."
That's when he scans the place and his eyes land on Gina. "This was you? Oh, you're going to pay?"
He doesn't walk up to her but walks towards me as I get out of the car. He grabs my arm and turns me to face him.
"Don't touch my girlfriend," Grayson says with a strong infliction of protection, as he steps between me and him. The guy, Andrew if I remember, drops my hand as he looks at Grayson.
He pushes him a bit as I throw Gina the bat. "What are you going to do about it?"
Now I get in front of Grayson, "Don't underestimate my boyfriend, he'll beat you up in 5 seconds."
"I only need 3," Grayson says with a smug grin.
That's when Andrew swings. I manage to duck and see as Grayson grabs his hand and twists it behind his back, bringing the other one as well. "Oww," Andrew whines at the pain.
"Thanks," I said, a bit winded. I turned to Andrew, "now we're going to watch that amazing gorgeous intelligent girl you let slip through your fingers because you were busy being a douche, finish getting her anger out on your car." I turned to the group of people staring at us, "Who was the second douchebag who tried to hit on my friend?"
