We get in the car, Bess in the back and I'm in the passenger seat as Nancy drives. We pull up to the barbershop, Nancy pulls out her phone and calls him. He walks out but declines the call, "Guess he's not endgame after all" Bess says
I roll my eyes, "I am only disappointed because of the task at hand" Nancy says
"Yeah, you keep telling yourself that" Bess says
"Let's just follow him and see where he goes" I say changing the subject
He pulls out and Nancy follows him. He pulls up to apartments and we pull next to him and get out of the car, "Why are you ducking my calls?" Nancy asks
"Yeah is it another girl? Oh how could you put me in the middle of this, Owen?" Bess asks
"No, no other girls but you three. Bess I thought you'd be getting ready for lunch with Aunt Diana" He says
"No I have exactly one hour, six minutes and 52 seconds. And I'm British by the way" She says
"Okay" He says
"Is this about the Bonny Scot?" Nancy asks
"This is why I've been avoiding you, Nancy. It's impossible to keep anything from you. Come on, follow me" He says
We follow him inside and he knocks on the door, "Bashiir? I'm Owen, we spoke on the phone earlier" Owen says
"You didn't mention bringing others" He says
"Sorry, uh, these three are habitual party crashers but...they're on our side" Owen says
He shuts the door and I look at Nancy before Bashiir opens the door, "Bess, Nancy, Skylar, this is Bashiir, sole survivor of the Bonny Scot" Owen says
We look at him then we walk in and sit on the couch opposite of him, "My family had a lobster-fishing business in Mogadishu. The warlords seized it and killed my parents. I fled" He says
"I'm so sorry" Nancy says
"I met a man, Gabriel, who could get me on a ship to the U.S. I paid him everything I had" He says
"Gabriel was one of my Uncle Sebastian's partners in Turkey. He told me about Bashiir" Owen says
"I stowed away aboard the Bonny Scot when it was docked in Istanbul. It wasn't hard to hide, the shipping containers were empty" He says
"Because the cargo never made it on board the Bonny Scot" I say
"What happened the night she sank?" Nancy asks
"I don't like reliving it" He says
"Please, I just want to know what happened to my uncle" Owen says
"I snuck up to the top deck to look at the stars and a bomb exploded below deck" He says
"How did you know it was a bomb?" Nancy asks
"From the war, I know the sound. I was able to get to the life raft, I was the only one. The fishing boat found me, they asked me where to drop me off, I didn't know. The crew on the Bonny Scot talked about this place, Horseshoe Bay, so I just said that" He says
"And you've been here ever since?" Bess asks
"My plan was to claim asylum once I got here, but I was afraid to come forward. I though the authorities wouldn't believe me or worse they'd blame me" He says
"Why would they blame you?" I ask
"Because of where I'm from. People sometimes suspect the worst when they hear the words Somali or undocumented" He says
