Chapter 21

We just stand there for awhile before Nick shows up, "We issued a statewide BOLO for Joshua Dodd. We have checkpoints on all the highways, and Chief McGinnis is coordinating with the Coast Guard" Karen says
"It's been over an hour. He could be anywhere by now" Nancy says

"Did he mention any friends, family?" Karen asks

"No, just his mom and she moved to a place in...Mapleton. Golden Pavilion" Nick says

Nancy's looking around, "Nick" She says and points to a camera

He grabs an iPad, "Okay, power got knocked out but this things supposed to have a backup battery, so hopefully, we got something" He says

He plays the video and we see him attacking us, I grab Nancy's hand. Nick fast forwards to after we run out. We see Josh move and get unhooked from the chain then start walking to a cabinet. Nancy turns and walks to it, "No, no, Nancy, don't!" I say

"Wait!" Karen says

She opens the cabinet, "He's gone" She says

"You guys should go, I'll keep you in the loop" Karen says
I nod my head and look at Nancy, "Let's go" I say

We get to her car and she drives back to her house. I walk her up to her front door, "Are you sure you're okay?" She asks

"I'm fine, Red, I promise" I say

She nods her head, "Goodnight, Red" I say

I go to walk away but she grabs my arm, "Can you stay?" She whispers

I turn to her, "Of course" I say

We walk in and her dad is asleep. I go to walk over to the couch but she stops me, "You can share my bed" She says

"Are you sure?" I ask

She nods her head before I follow her up to her room and she hands me some clothes to wear since we are soaked. I walk to the bathroom to get changed and when I walk back in, Nancy is already in bed. I lay down next to her, "Thank you for protecting me" She whispers

"Anytime" I whisper back

Next Morning

I wake up and feel a weight on my body. I look down and realize Nancy is resting her head on my chest. She must have moved closer in her sleep, I smile. After a few minutes, she starts to stir awake, "Good morning" I say

"Morning" She says

Then she realizes where she is laying and sits up, "I'm sorry, I didn't realize..." She rambles nervously

I sit up and look at her, "Hey, it's okay" I say and give her a smile to reassure her

"How are you feeling?" She asks
"I'm okay" I say

She raises her eyebrow, "Okay, my head hurts but I'm fine I swear. Nothing an ibuprofen won't fix" I say with a small smile

She smiles then we get dressed, I throw on what I wore yesterday because it's dry then we walk downstairs, "Hope you're hungry. Bacon's extra crispy, just the way you like it" Carson says

He looks up and sees me, "Skylar?" He asks confused

I give him a slight wave and smile, "Hi Mr. Drew" I say

"She stayed the night" Nancy says
"Oh...okay, well I made plenty" He says

"Thanks, but we are actually heading out" Nancy says

"You know, I think you should stay home today, get some rest" He says

"No time for that, unfortunately" She says

"Whatever else you have going on, it can wait" He says

"What I have going on is trying to keep you out of jail, so no, it cannot" She says

"Nancy, you almost died last night" He looks at me, "Both of you almost did" He says

"Almost dying is my new normal" She says

"Come on, I'm serious. Joshua is still out there, we've got the state police guarding our front porch. Benefits of house arrest" He says

"I am fine. If Josh is going after anyone, it's Ryan and I'm sure he's hold up at the Hudson compound with his security detail" She says and takes a bite of bacon

"Well, that doesn't make me feel any better. Do you want to maybe tell me why you think he'd be going after Ryan?" He asks

He hands her a cup of coffee and she sighs. I sit down and eat some food, "Joshua went to poison Ryan at the Claw but killed Tiffany instead. He found some evidence that led him to believe that Ryan killed Lucy. Apparently, Lucy and Ryan planned to meet the night she died" Nancy says

"Wouldn't Ryan have been away at boarding school in 2000?" Carson asks

"That's his story. But if I can prove that he wasn't and do it before tomorrow..." She says

"Then maybe you can burst into my evidentiary hearing with a magic bullet that gets all the charges dropped. Nancy, I don't want you to get your hopes up. After the evidentiary hearing tomorrow, they will most likely transfer me to a prison in the next county while I'm awaiting trial" He says

"But it is possible that you won't. It's possible that you'll be exonerated, right? Tell me that's possible" She begs

"It'd take a miracle" He says

She turns and starts to walk away so I follow, "Where are you going?" He asks

"I'm gonna go find you your miracle" She says

She walks out, "Skylar wait" He says

I turn around, "Don't let her put herself in any danger" He says

"I promise" I say

I walk out and find Nancy and we drive to the Claw. We walk inside, "Silver lining: my eyes didn't bleed, which supposedly happens when you get your wish" George says

"We talking about the Aglaeca?" Nancy asks

"The what?" I ask

"Ancient sea witch" Ace says

"Ahh..." I shake my head, "...of course" I say

"Yeah that's a load of crap. I'm still waiting for my hoverboard scooter and my first edition copy of All the President's Men" Nancy says

"Hey, how are you two feeling?" Nick asks

"Fine" I say

"I'm fine. Hey, do you have the copies of Ryan's emails to Lucy?" Nancy asks

"Mm-hmm in my car. All about that paper trail" Ace says

Then his phone buzzes, "Whoa, check it out" He says

"Chief McGinnis is leading the manhunt for Joshua Dodd, who we now believe is responsible for the death of Tiffany Hudson. As a safety precaution, all Harbor Day festivities have been cancelled" Karen says on video

"Boo, uh..." Bess says

"What's my dad doing there?" Ace asks

"He could be volunteering to help with the manhunt" Bess says

"Hey, I need to bring those emails to Karen at the police station. It might help my dad's case so if you want to..." She says

"Hey, I'll come with you" Ace says

"I'm coming too" I say

"Me too, I want to figure out how Josh got the poison" Nick says
