"Nen, nen korori yo
Okorori yo
Bō wa yoi koda
Nenneshina
Bōya no omori wa
doko e itta?", a young, innocent voice softly sang a soothing tune in a dimly lit bedroom. The still air carried the sound like a crisp, cool breeze on a hot day. It was a delight, a refreshing sound. However, for some odd reason, it was rather unsettling. It felt unreal. In this bedroom, a little girl sat beside a futon, where an even younger boy lay as she put him to sleep.
"Ano yama koete
sato e itta
Sato no miyage ni
nani morōta?
Denden taiko ni
shō no fue...", she sang, patting the boy lightly on his chest."Goodnight, onee-san.", the boy said softly. Slowly, he dozed off to the sound of her lullaby, drifting off into a sound sleep.
"Goodnight otouto.", the girl bade quietly. She covered him with an extra blanket, although with an icy gaze that contradicted the action. Quietly, she stepped out into the main courtyard.
Under the light of the moon, the girl prepared her weapons for the night's patrol duty.
After pouring water into a large bowl, she knelt next to the large sharpening stone. Momentarily, she relished in the silence of the night, that was broken only by the rhythmic chirps of crickets and cicadas. She brought out her Anbu katana and pressed it against the stone. Slowly, she poured the water and began stroke the shining blade against its weathered surface.
It was still early, she had a bit of time before she had to relieve her counterpart of his duty. She didn't rush, it wasn't everyday that she had the place to herself like this. It wasn't everyday that she would be home at for so long, too.
Just as she finished sharpening the last of her kunai, she heard a shogi open slowly in the area where the kitchen was. The hushed voices of her parents could be heard as they whispered in discussion about the secret meeting that they had just come from.
She gathered her weapons and packed them in their respective positions before rising to her feet. Slowly, quietly, she approached the back shoji that led to the dining area, which she could listen through as it was an extention of the kitchen. She heard her parents settle down in the dining area, where they would dine on the supper she had made them. Silent as a mouse, and knelt under the shade of a nearby tree- so that her shadow would not show through the shoji- and listened.
"... And I suppose three weeks is enough time to prepare. Thank you.", Fugaku, her father, said.
Mikoto, her mother, hummed in agreement, her voice a sweet song to the girl's ears. Although it was rather sickly sweet now that the girl had discovered that she a part of one of her father's malicious schemes.
"I'll have the base fully in my grasp by then. I just hope that you can handle him.", she responded seriously.
"Of course, I wouldn't have it any other way.", Fugaku said simply.
"I do wish that we could let Tama-chan know about this, at least.", Mikoto said softly, guilt heavy in her tone at the mention of her daughter. There was silence for a few moments, a bit of tension nipping at the air between the two of them.
