You can't understand the Outerbanks without understanding the boneyard. It's kinda like a three layer burrito.

There's us and our friends, the working class derelicts.

Then, there are the Kooks, the rich second-homers. They're mostly from poncey-ass boarding schools, just trustafarian posers. Our natural enemies.

And then, there's the tourons. Totally clueless, here for a week on vacation with their families. Chum for the sharks.

John B was stood by the keg pouring beers while Grace, Kie and JJ all sat together on a branch drinking and laughing. Pope was off somewhere probably talking some girl's ear off about dead bodies. Real charming.

Kie tapped Grace on the shoulder and pointed at some touron in the distance. "He's cute," she giggled slightly buzzed.

Grace laughed, "Go shoot your shot."

Kie smiled then hopped up off the branch, "Wish me luck!"

"You don't need it," Grace said with a dismissive wave of her hand.

Grace watched as her friend introduced herself confidently and smiled. JJ just watched her.

"Hey, Sunshine?"

"What's up J?" she answered, peeling her eyes from Kie.

"Are you alright?" he asked simply.

"Yeah...I'm sorry for brushing you off. It was just a tough day and I needed space and-"

He interrupted her, "You don't have to explain yourself."

She smiled softly up at him.

"You were on the mathletes?" he suddenly asked.

Grace groaned and covered her face with her hands.  "It was short lived...I only joined cause Pope was too afraid to do it on his own but I quickly realized I can't do math and was kicked out."

JJ threw his head back laughing, "So you joined the mathletes...and then got kicked out of the mathletes. That's so sad."

"Shut it, Maybank," she laughed but abruptly stopped as she stared down the beach. "No fucking way."

"What's wrong?" JJ asked as he turned to see what she was looking at. "What the fuck."

"How could she? I mean we didn't date for that long but she's literally my sister that's so fucked up," Grace ranted, glaring at Sarah Cameron and Topper laughing together and holding hands.

"They deserve each other. Both rich assholes who can't survive without daddy's money," JJ scoffed.

"Amen to that," she replied lifting her solo cup.

An hour or so later the sun had set, the music got louder and the teens got drunker. Grace had been approached by a touron. His cluelessness was very obvious but somewhat endearing. She was going to brush him off and go challenge JJ to a chugging contest but he was busy chatting up some blonde tourist. She didn't know why seeing him wrap his arm around the girl's shoulders like he so often did to hers made her chest hurt.
