Taehyung stirred away due to the feeling of something moving on his waist, and also the soreness from staying in the same position for a long time.
Confused, he opened his eyes and looked down to see Jeongguk's arm holding him tight. Then, they shot up to reveal the boy fast asleep, chest moving softly which Taehyung had fallen asleep against.
When did we fall asleep? Taehyung lifted his head and shuffled up, but stopped when Jeongguk squirmed due to the arm around Taehyung's waist moving too much. It was a strange feeling as he had never been so close up to Jeongguk's face before, and he didn't know what the racing of his heart meant.
The situation felt familiar, except that last time Taehyung recalled being in this position was in a different room and Jeongguk's face was much closer, and he was wide awake. The more he thought about it, the harder his heart began to race.
He didn't stare for long though, figures began to approach his door which made him quickly drop his head back onto Jeongguk's chest and hold him tight.
"Oh," Mrs. Kim breathed out when she saw the two cuddled up against each other, "Don't wake him up." She quickly stopped the man who stepped forward.
"I really don't like the fact Taehyung is being lied to about everything." Mr. Kim clenched his jaw and turned to his wife who let out a sigh, staring at her in pity.
What the hell? Taehyung tried his best not react, but it wasn't easy when he wanted to know what was going on. He had a feeling there was something off, that he had been lied to about something big, but he couldn't connect anything.
Hanseul began to speak, "Dad, you know he's going through so much already why would you want to dump the past onto him now? We can tell him when he's r-"
"Because he's all cuddled up innocently with the reason behind all of this." Mr. Kim spat angrily, trying his best not to raise his voice, "That boy is why Taehyung got into an accident."
What? Taehyung almost frowned.
"How is it his fault?" Hanseul scoffed, "Taehyung got into a car crash, someone crashed into him and made him roll off the cliff. And that someone was not Jeongguk, so how is it his fault?"
"She's right honey, Jeongguk didn't do anything to make Taehyung crash." Mrs. Kim frowned at the man who only got more frustrated by the second, "And didn't you say that you don't mind Jeongguk seeing him?"
"I don't mind as long as they aren't getting this close. And come on, use your goddamn head- Taehyung had been acting noticeably different the week before the crash. How have the police not found a car that looks like it collided with something driving around? How did everyone that day not witness another car driving away after the crash?"
"Then how did his car-" Hanseul stopped talking and glanced between her parents, "Do you...you think he did it to himself?"
Why the fuck would I do that? Taehyung felt like he knew the answer, but the harder he thought about it the more lost he got.
"Let's not assume, right now we need to focus on supporting him and maybe- I pray to god- he will regain his memories and we can resolve this then." Mrs. Kim attempted to calm the atmosphere, but it was already tense.
"He's not going to regain everything, you know this, the doctors have said this." Mr. Kim's bottom lip quivered, "He's not going back to normal."
Taehyung's heart hurt at that, he had no connection with these people but hearing their pain and grieving about a person they cherished hurt. He wanted to go back to whatever he was, he wanted things to be normal but it wouldn't happen which made everything seem so pointless.
"Let's step outside, hopefully they'll wake up before visiting hour end." Mrs. Kim placed an arm around her daughter and began to lead the way out, glancing back at her son with a sad look.
When the door shut, Taehyung immediately opened his eyes and slowly helped himself up.
What the hell were they talking about? What do they mean it was Jeongguk's fault- and why would I willingly crash a car? Taehyung's mind was racing with questions which he no answer to.
His thoughts stopped when Jeongguk beside him shuffled and also slowly sat up, rubbing his eyes and looking around disoriented.
"We fell asleep?" He asked with a raspy voice, looking at Taehyung who nodded, "Where are your parents?"
"Outside." Taehyung mumbled, "Don't call them that."
"What do you want me to call them?" Jeongguk asked, staring at Taehyung attentively who was chewing on his bottom lip stressfully.
"I don't know, but they're not my family."
"They are Taehyung, you'll get used to it sooner or later." Jeongguk carefully made his way out of bed, "I'm gonna g0-"
"Why?" Taehyung felt his heart drop, "No don't go."
"Why? You need to spend time with them Tae, visiting hours are almost over too." Jeongguk stood by the edge and panicked when Taehyung began to shuffle towards him too, "Don't get up."
"You can't leave me here!"
"Why? Tae, you're gonna be perfectly fine here." Jeongguk reassured the boy who shook his head.
"No I hate it here, I-" Taehyung paused as he tried to find the right words, "It's, so-"
"Slow down," Jeongguk placed a hand on Taehyung's shoulder who shoved it off roughly.
"I know what to do! Don't tell me to slow down!" Taehyung snapped, growing more frustrated, "I just, it makes me- scared."
"Of what?"
"I don't know what's going on, they do stuff to see me and I don't do-" He stopped again, struggling even more.
Jeongguk hummed, trying his best to understand, "Do you mean all the tests and medications?"
"Yes, tests, and I'm scared because it always means something bad. I'm always losing a part of myself."
"That's not true, you still have a lot of things." Jeongguk took a seat beside Taehyung who seemed on the verge of tears.
"No, I can't speak, I can't read, I can't write, I don't know what you mean a lot, and I am in hospital so much."
"This is just the beginning Taehyung, you're not going to be perfectly fine so fast. It'll take time, years even." Jeongguk took Taehyung's hand into his, but the boy yanked it back. He must hate physical touch now,
"Please don't go."
"Your parents don't want me to stay. I promise I'll be back first thing tomorrow and I'll try stay as long as I can, and I'll come everyday until you get discharged." Jeongguk stood up again, trying his best not to fall for the teary doe eyes Taehyung was unintentionally giving him.
"That's not enough." Taehyung tugged his bottom lip out.
Jeongguk's breath hitched. Just for a split second, it was like the old Taehyung was back. It was strange that Taehyung was now a hostile, cold, and impulsive person but he had moments where his old self would slip out. It was comforting in a way knowing that no matter what, some aspects of people would always remain and things won't change to the point it's unbearable.
But, Jeongguk knew he had to stop thinking that. He had to stop obsessing over old Taehyung and the past, because that was the past and wouldn't ever return. He knew it was selfish to want that when Taehyung had expressed many times that he feels upset that all people talk about is him in the past.
"Sorry, but don't worry, I'll call you all night if you like." Jeongguk smiled at the boy who just let out an exhausted sigh.
That's not enough.
