"Okay class, we're mixing classes today. I need you to.. I'm- okay. Projects, two paintings— same thing happening from different perspectives."
He starts to pair everybody off, getting half way through before pointing to me. "Tomlinson, over there." His glare had almost burnt my eyes out. "What's up kitten? Why the frown?"
"Don't talk to me." He grumbles. "Unfortunately for you, we have to. For the next however long we're working together. Like a team, do you- know what that is?"
"You make me want to throw up on myself." I stick my thumbs up. "Super cute."
The day was, eventful to say the least. Darla and Evan went out after school and I was stuck in the house on my own.
I wasn't sure where the rain had come from, it was weird.
It did t rain much, or so I was told.
"Harry!" Louis yelled. I'd ignored him hoping he would just leave. "Your board is down here I know you're in the house."
Fuck.
"I'm upstairs." The door swings open and I swear he had about six million pens. "I have pens, you have paper?"
"Nope. No paper. We fear Jordan may eat it and start fighting school children for more." Stopping by the bookshelf he starts silently judging my room. "You're weird."
"You're judging my room right now." I sit up on my elbows. "No. Seriously I'm not my face just does things in its own."
I thought my room was nice. "I've never actually had a bedroom before so I didn't know what to do I just kind of, guessed my way through."
"You did good. It's warm- I'm sorry, speed back. You've never what?" I shrug. "What are we doing for the project?"
"Two paintings, different perspectives. Like a- mental breakdown or something. It would be my room verses yours. How'd you get it this messy?"
"I move around a lot. Come on." Grabbing his hand I drag him back down the stairs towards the sun room. "Your grandma said your mum is rich, your dad rich too? Or is it a leech situation?"
"No they're both just as rich as each other unfortunately." Handing him the canvas I watched the cogs turn in his head. "So you just came from money from birth?"
I clear my throat. "Could you check that drawer for some uh- there's new, paints in there I think." My heart was racing. "Touchy subject? Or are you just that rich?"
"No I'm not- I'm not rich." He nods. "Right, no your parents are rich that's what I'm saying. I mean you've never worked a day in your life. You come from money, you ran away because- what they tried to make you work?"
"Why are you doing this?" I asked. "Doing what? I'm just asking you a question. You ask me questions all the time."
"Did you find the paints?" He nods. "Why are you in a pissy mood?"
"I'm not in a pissy mood. What are we doing for this then? Or do you have more pressing questions that you just so obviously know are true?" He snickers. "You're being dramatic Harry. I asked you a question and you ignored me so I answered it."
"I'm not doing this today. I don't- want to do this with you today. Come back tomorrow or something cause I feel seriously unwanted in my own house."
"Oh my daze. Get over yourself please. You're acting like your fucking mother." I heard the front door open quietly. "Harry were back!"
"Get out." He shrugs. "Fine."
*...*
"Are you okay?" Darla falls beside me on the bed. "Do you think I'm a terrible person?"
"What did he do?" She tucks the hair behind my ear, it didn't stay there long. "I know I come from money but I never got any."
"What does that have to do with anything? You said you moved because you didn't want to work there." Worst mistake I could've made.
"Harry what's wrong?" I shrug. "I'm being dramatic it's fine. Don't you have practice for something?" She laughs. "I have study group. I would stay but my dad would kill me."
"It's okay. Have fun." She kisses my forehead. A few minutes after, Jordan stormed in and I felt my heart drop. "We're going out to eat."
"Okay." He nods. "Are you coming?" Nina groans. "Jordan seriously you can't keep doing that. Honey, what's wrong?"
"Nothing." She sits beside me. Running her hand through my hair. "Come on. We're just gonna go get some food. We can come back and watch a couple movies together."
"Do you need me to get a job? My mum said I wasn't allowed but I can get one if you want me to. I can pay you back for everything." Sitting up too quickly I watched her frown deepen.
"Why would we need you to pay us. We want you here, if we wanted you to pay rent we would've asked you. That Tomlinson boy said something didn't he? You were okay this morning what happened?"
I spaced out for a while. Got a little car sick from staring at the leaflet I had in my pocket.
The diner was quiet, dark too. Half the lights were broken too but it was still pretty bright.
The windows were all fogged up from the cold and the conversation was dying down with the Christmas music playing quietly over them.
Watching the kid across from me play drums on his dad's head with his plastic forks.
"Do you want some bread?" I nod. "Yes please." I didn't want everything paid for. I hadn't really thought much of it the past couple days because I've never had this much attention.
But she was paying for so many things. "Jake your food is here sit down. Your dad might turn into a robot and eat you."
He jumped down on his seat and just started talking to his food. "Do you want fries? Burger? You need something. Anything."
"Yeah. Yeah that- sounds good." She tuts. "That's how I know you're lying. You don't even eat meat. Honey you look like you just lost someone. Talk to me."
"I'm fine I'm just hungry. I'll just have the fries, like two of them or something."
I didn't really want to seem ungrateful, she was paying for my food and I was saying no. But I hated taking things even more.
My mum would've killed me if I'd even opened my mouth while we were out.
The only reason I ever got told to join was because she had to take me places on Christmas. "What did he say?"
"Nothing. I just hate when he talks and I wasn't in the mood to hear it." She laughs. "Okay."
