Morning returned to Paniola Town with soft sunlight over the ranch roofs, but the town square already felt brighter than yesterday. Contest banners fluttered from wooden posts, flower garlands curved around the stage entrance, and the road where Hau had challenged me now carried performers, families, and Pokémon moving toward the venue.

Selene stood near the entrance with Mareanie's Poké Ball in both hands. Alolan Grimer waited beside her, wobbling in place with unusual seriousness. She had won one ribbon already, but her shoulders still looked stiff enough that I knew the second one felt heavier.

Lillie moved closer with Snowy in her arms. "You already proved that you and your partners can belong onstage. Today is about showing Paniola what makes them special."

Selene breathed out slowly. "I know. I just want Mareanie and Grimer to be seen as beautiful without pretending they are something else."

Mareanie appeared beside her in a flash of light and touched one tentacle against Selene's shoe. Its eyes lifted with nervous pride, its meaning clear, "Let us make strange things shine."

Selene knelt and smiled. "That is exactly our plan."

Alolan Grimer shifted closer and gave Mareanie a thick approving nod. Its surface rippled under the morning light, its meaning stubborn and loyal, "If the stage becomes scary, I can hold it steady."

Rosa laughed softly. "That is possibly the most Grimer encouragement ever, but it works."

Before Selene could answer, a familiar voice called from the road. "Ash!"

I turned and saw Mom hurrying toward us with a travel bag over one shoulder, smiling like she had crossed the sea only to make sure she did not miss this day. Beside her was Lillie's father, who looked from the banners to Lillie with quiet warmth.

"Mom!" I ran over, and she hugged me before I remembered how many people were watching.

"Professor Kukui told me there was a Contest in Paniola," Mom said. "I wanted to see everyone, and I especially wanted to watch you help today."

Lillie stepped toward her father. "Father, I did not know you were coming."

"I wanted to see this with you," he said. "Alola has given you so many new moments. I did not want this one to only be a story I heard later."

Snowy leaned toward him, then settled comfortably against Lillie again. Lillie understood her gentle meaning, "He came because your happiness matters."

The venue doors opened, and a Contest staff member hurried toward me with a ribboned clipboard. "Ash Ketchum, thank you for agreeing to serve as a special support judge for the Paniola Contest. The judging table is ready."

Selene looked at me with surprise, though she already knew I had been asked to help. Hearing the title out loud made the role feel more official. I was not competing against her, and I was not taking her place. I would be judging trust, control, and partner connection, then presenting the winning Contest Ribbon after the final result.

I adjusted my cap and looked at Selene. "I will be watching carefully, but the stage is yours."

Selene nodded, steadier now. "Then I will make sure you have something worth judging."

Inside, the Contest hall carried Paniola's warmth in every beam and banner. It was not the largest stage I had ever seen, but the wooden floor, floral patterns, and close audience seats made every cheer feel personal. The whole place felt like it had been built for partners who wanted to be seen clearly.

The stage decorations used ranch colors instead of polished city silver. Hay-bale props sat near the side walls, flowers hung from rails, and a painted backdrop showed Paniola's fields beneath an orange sky. It reminded me that a Contest did not have to look the same in every region to matter. Alola was shaping the event in its own voice.
