Aether Paradise rose from the sea like something too clean to be involved in fear. White walls, bright lights, polished paths, and quiet water should have made the place feel safe. Instead, the harbor felt like a held breath.

The boat's engine faded behind us, and the silence that followed felt arranged. No tourists wandered the unnaturally quiet dock, no employees hurried forward with welcoming smiles, and even the Pokémon in the surrounding water kept their distance. The Paradise had always presented itself as a sanctuary, but sanctuaries did not usually feel like they were waiting to decide whether visitors were threats.

Gladion stepped off the boat first, eyes already searching the empty dock. "Aether Paradise's harbor. We made it this far without running into trouble, but I do not like how quiet it is. Stay alert."

Lillie stepped down after him more slowly. I had seen her nervous before, but this was different from stage fright, trial fear, or the tension before a battle. This place knew her childhood, and that made every clean surface feel personal. She was not only walking into danger. She was walking back into a house that had once decided how small she was allowed to be.

Hau followed with a worried look toward the tower above us. "But why would Nebby be here at Aether Paradise?"

"Faba took Nebby," I said. "Faba works here. That is enough of an answer for now."

Trenor looked toward the paths leading deeper inside. "So what is the plan? Start asking around?"

Lillie stared at the building for a moment longer than anyone else. "I suppose we take the elevator."

"You suppose?" Selene asked. "That does not sound like a concrete plan."

"It is the only path we can see," Lillie answered. "So we start there."

The first Aether Employees appeared before we had crossed far from the harbor. Some recognized Gladion immediately. Others looked at Lillie as if they had seen a ghost from a family portrait. Recognition did not soften them. If anything, it made them more determined to block us.

One employee stepped forward with a Poké Ball in hand. "Unauthorized movement through the facility is prohibited."

Gladion's voice hardened. "You know who we are."

"That does not change our orders."

The battle began before anyone could pretend this was a misunderstanding. Aether Pokémon attacked in neat formation, not with Team Skull's noise but with trained silence. The difference made the place feel worse. Team Skull shouted because they wanted the world to look at their pain. Aether fought like rules had replaced conscience.

Pikachu and Snowy held the front, while Krokorok read the floor vibrations for approaching reinforcements. Greninja slipped ahead and knocked one employee's Pokémon away before it could flank Lillie. Zygarde watched the entire harbor, expression unreadable but presence steady.

For a moment, I wondered what Aether Paradise looked like to Zygarde. The Foundation called itself a protector of Pokémon, yet the air around us already felt like protection had been confused with possession. Zygarde had protected Kalos by restoring balance from the damage Team Flare left behind. Now it stood in another region, facing another beautiful structure that might have hidden danger behind a noble word.

Zygarde's gaze moved across the white walls, calm and heavy, "Order without balance is only another cage."

"I know," I said. "And we are not letting it close."

The employees fell back only after their Pokémon could no longer stand. None of them looked confused by what they were doing. That bothered me more than if they had panicked. People could be misled by one bad order, but this felt like a place where bad orders had been practiced until they sounded ordinary.
