The door finished opening, and the room beyond felt too clean for what waited inside it. Pale light washed over polished floors, white walls, and the glassy surfaces of machines I did not recognize. Lusamine stood near the center as if she had arranged the whole room to frame herself, calm and beautiful while Nebby's cage rested behind her.

Lillie moved before any of us could speak. "Mother!"

Lusamine turned, and for one strange heartbeat, her face softened into something that looked almost normal. "Lillie!"

She crossed the room quickly and wrapped her arms around Lillie, brushing one hand through her hair as if none of this had been terror, secrets, laboratories, Team Skull, or Nebby crying somewhere behind her. Lillie went stiff in her arms, caught between the daughter who had missed that warmth and the Trainer who knew better than to trust it.

"My sweet baby girl," Lusamine said. "You have returned. I was so worried about you. I wondered every day where you had gone."

"Mother, please stop," Lillie said, her face flushing with pain instead of embarrassment. "This is not what matters right now."

Lusamine's eyes shifted to me, and her smile brightened in a way that made my stomach twist. "Ash, thank you for bringing her back to me. You have my gratitude."

I did not know which answer would be less dangerous. "I came because Lillie and Nebby needed help."

Lusamine's hand paused in Lillie's hair. The room seemed to cool around that pause. Somewhere behind her, Nebby's cage gave a faint pulse of light, weak enough that I almost missed it, but Lillie noticed immediately. Her whole body changed, daughterly hesitation hardening into the promise she had carried since leaving Aether Paradise.

Lillie pulled herself free, stepping back until Snowy could press against her ankle. "Where is Nebby? What are you going to do with it?"

"Nebby?" Lusamine repeated, as if the name itself disappointed her. "You mean Cosmog. You do not need to worry about it any longer. My fathomless love will save all of you when I protect this world from darkness."

"Protect this world?" Lillie asked. "Is that why you took Nebby? Is that what you would sacrifice it for?"

Lusamine looked past Lillie toward the machinery. "If Cosmog's power must be forced open, then so be it. It may suffer. It may even die. But if that sacrifice protects every beloved Pokémon in Alola, then I will bear that burden."

I felt my breath catch, but I forced myself to stay silent. This was Lillie's moment, and she did not back away from it.

"Nebby is not a burden for you to bear," Lillie said. "Nebby is alive."

Lusamine's smile did not fully disappear. That made it worse. "You kept it safe until now, Lillie. For that, I thank you."

The words were gentle, but they landed like a door closing. Lusamine was not ignoring Lillie because she did not hear her. She heard every word and folded it into the shape she wanted. That was the frightening part. She could make cruelty sound like sacrifice and theft sound like gratitude.

I had faced villains who shouted their plans and enemies who wore their selfishness openly. Lusamine was different. She spoke like every terrible choice had already been wrapped in silk and placed under a glass case, safe from being touched by anyone else's pain.

Lillie's hands trembled at her sides, but she did not step back toward me. That mattered more than any words I could have given her. She had spent so long running from this room, and now she was standing in front of the person who had made running feel like the only way to breathe.
