Route 11 did not welcome us with a roar. It welcomed us with the hollow tapping of bamboo, the warm rustle of leaves, and a path that felt quieter than the streets of Malie City behind us. The air smelled green and damp, and every breeze made the bamboo stalks knock gently together like someone was counting our steps.
I slowed down without meaning to. Lillie noticed it first and followed my gaze toward the grove spreading beside the road. Selene walked a few steps ahead with Brionne and Charjabug, but even she stopped when the bamboo bent over the path and turned the sunlight into thin gold lines.
Trenor rested a hand against one of the stalks, listening to the sound it made under his palm. "This route feels calm, but not empty. Stoutland keeps looking into the grove like something is watching us."
Stoutland lowered his nose near the roots, his ears lifting as his tail gave one careful sweep, "Something is asleep, but it is not unaware."
Lillie answered Stoutland directly with a small nod, because she had understood the meaning as clearly as I had. "Then we should walk carefully. Sleeping does not always mean defenseless, especially here."
Ariados moved lightly along the edge of the path, testing the air with her front legs. Shiinotic stayed close to the shade, glowing faintly where the bamboo made the route dim. Trumbeak perched on my shoulder for a moment, then hopped to a branch and looked over the grove with a sharper stare than usual.
Rosa folded her arms, but her expression softened when a dry clicking sound came from deeper inside the bamboo. "That does not sound like a trap. It sounds like something small trying very hard not to be bothered."
Nate took out his notebook, though he did not start writing yet. "A quiet route with a sleeping watcher and bamboo everywhere. That is exactly the kind of place where trouble arrives because someone thinks calm means easy."
We followed the sound away from the main path. The bamboo opened around a small clearing, and there, tucked between two leaning stalks, a Komala slept against its log. It did not open its eyes when we approached, but its paws tightened around the wood as if it already knew our number, our distance, and the direction of the wind.
Komala shifted its log across its belly, its sleeping face peaceful while its ears twitched toward us, "Step softly. The grove is listening."
Selene covered her mouth to keep from laughing too loudly. "That is strangely adorable, and also a little scary. I do not think it needs to wake up to judge us."
I crouched a short distance away and kept my hands visible. "We are not here to damage your grove. We are traveling through Route 11, and we only came closer because you caught our attention."
Komala rolled once in its sleep, landing upright on the log with impossible balance. Its paws patted the bamboo roots twice, then it settled again without opening its eyes, "Visitors may pass. Breakers may not."
Lillie smiled gently, but she did not step past me. "It knows the difference between visitors and threats. That is wonderful, Ash."
The grove answered before I could speak. A sharp crack echoed from the far side, followed by rough laughter and the thud of something striking bamboo too hard. Several wild Pokémon scattered from the leaves, and Trumbeak's feathers bristled as the path's calm snapped apart.
Three Team Skull Grunts pushed into the clearing, dragging a fallen bamboo pole behind them like they had found treasure instead of a living grove. One of them kicked at the roots, and the others laughed when a pair of small wild Pokémon fled into the grass. They stopped laughing when they noticed us standing between them and Komala.
