The next morning, Akala Island greeted us with warm sunlight across Tide Song Hotel, and the sea outside Heahea City looked bright enough to make even a sleepy Snorlax consider opening one eye. Professor Kukui reminded us that Paniola Town sat beyond Route 4, and Olivia gave us an encouraging smile before we left.
Lillie adjusted Snowy's position in her arms while Pikachu climbed onto my shoulder. Selene checked Rotom's notes from yesterday, Trenor tightened the strap on his field bag, Nate slipped his notebook into his jacket, and Rosa fixed the ribbon in her hair before pretending she had not done it. The school group was just as lively, with Mallow talking about ranch vegetables and Kiawe warning us not to underestimate Akala's open roads.
Route 4 began gently, with tall grass swaying beside the path and soft hills rolling toward Paniola. It felt different from Melemele's cliffs and beaches. The air smelled like grass, berries, and sun-warmed earth, and every step carried us farther from the hotel into a road where wild Pokémon could appear from rustling grass.
A Grubbin poked its head out near Selene's shoes, and her own Grubbin leaned forward with sparks in its eyes. Selene crouched carefully, letting the wild one decide whether to approach. It vanished after a moment, but her Grubbin kept watching the grass as if Route 4 had whispered a secret about growing stronger.
Selene touched Grubbin's head gently. "You want to understand what makes this island's soil feel different, don't you?"
Grubbin pressed its little feet into the road and lifted its jaws with a focused meaning: "There is power under here. I want to learn how to hold it."
"Looks like your partner likes Akala already," I said, smiling at Selene.
Selene brushed dust from her knee and gave Grubbin a proud glance. "Maybe Akala has a few lessons waiting for us, too. I do not want to rush them, though."
Trenor's Mudbray walked beside him with steady steps, hooves pressing confidently into the road. A few wild Mudbray grazed farther down the slope, lifting their heads when they noticed him. Trenor did not call it a challenge. He simply rested a hand against his Mudbray's neck, and the little Ground-type stood a bit taller.
Mudbray stamped once, firmly enough to answer the distant herd. Trenor smiled at the meaning he understood through the movement: "This road is steady. I can carry us farther."
"Paniola must be close if Mudbray are already this comfortable," Trenor said. "This road feels like it was made for them."
Kiawe nodded with quiet pride. "You will understand once we reach the ranch. Akala's strength is not always loud, but it stays under your feet."
We passed a berry pile near a fence, and I saw one of the berries twitch before a familiar pair of claws popped out. A Crabrawler waved one claw like it owned the entire pile. Our Crabrawler was not out of its Poké Ball, but Route 4 still reminded us that Akala Pokémon had their own stubborn sense of territory.
Mallow laughed softly. "That one looks ready to argue with anyone who touches breakfast."
"Then we should respect breakfast," Lana said, her voice calm enough to make the rest of us laugh.
Lillie looked across the open road toward the hills. "I like that Akala feels gentle right now. After everything that happened before we reached this island, a peaceful walk is welcome."
Snowy tucked her face against Lillie's arm, then peeked toward the sunny grass with calmer eyes. Lillie smiled down at her, understanding the small gesture as clearly as speech: "It is bright, but I am safe here."
Olivia had told us that Akala's beauty could be calm one moment and intense the next. I understood that better as we walked. The road gave us soft grass and cheerful Pokémon, but the slopes ahead still looked strong enough to test anyone who forgot to respect them.
