The next morning kept Ula'ula's air cool enough that Malie City felt almost like an old Johto morning wearing Alolan colors. After the Kantonian Gym, Ryuki's Dragon Scale still rested safely in my bag, and Dartrix walked with a little extra pride whenever it remembered Brave Bird.

Lillie still wanted the library, but the city had one more errand before we reached it. Kagetora's list had brought us to a quiet Community Center where older residents sat beneath soft lights, talking, resting, and watching the world move slower than the streets outside.

An old lady sat near the window, stifling a yawn with one hand. Her hair was neat, her posture careful, and her eyes carried the tired shine of someone who had seen many battles but no longer trusted every memory to return when called.

"The old eyes are getting tired," she murmured.

Lillie approached gently. "Excuse me. Are you the skilled Jolteon user? We were sent by Kagetora to challenge you to a battle."

The old lady looked up with a faint smile. "Why yes, I suppose I am. I'm Jane. Eevee? Kagetora? I'm sorry, child. I do not remember them. I do remember Pokémon battles, though, even if I am not sure I am still up to one."

Lillie did not push the name harder. "Only if you want to battle."

The battle drew a few gentle spectators from the Community Center. Nobody cheered loudly, perhaps because the room carried too many naps and quiet conversations, but several residents watched with brightened faces. One man tapped his cane in rhythm with Jolteon's steps, and another whispered that Jane used to be faster than the young Trainers who challenged her.

That made the battle feel heavier. Lillie was not simply challenging an Eevee user from Kagetora's list. She was touching a piece of history that had become fragile at the edges. Every command she gave to Midnight Lycanroc respected that fragility without surrendering to it.

Jolteon used speed to compensate for Jane's slower reactions. Sometimes it moved before the command fully left her mouth, understanding the shape of the order from old habit. That bond had survived where names had not, and I felt my chest tighten at the thought. Memory could lose faces, but a partner's rhythm might remain.

Jane's Jolteon stepped beside her chair, still bright despite its Trainer's weary voice. Lillie chose our Midnight Form Lycanroc, and the Community Center staff cleared a safe space with the practiced patience of people used to sudden old habits becoming alive again.

Jolteon moved fast, sparks flashing across the floor like memories trying to become lightning. Midnight Lycanroc answered with firm footing, letting each strike pass close before countering. Lillie kept her voice steady, never treating Jane as fragile and never pretending the old woman was not tired.

Jane smiled more with every exchange. "There it is. I had forgotten how thunder sounds when it is friendly."

Lycanroc glanced toward Lillie before the final exchange, its meaning clear, "Her memories are fading, but this battle still reaches her."

Lillie nodded softly. "Then we will honor it."

She activated Rockium Z, and Midnight Lycanroc answered with Continental Crush. The stone power rose and fell, overwhelming Jolteon without cruelty. Jane watched the finish with a wistful expression, as if the battle had opened a door but not the one we needed.

"You provide a dazzling battle," Jane said. "When lightning strikes the earth, it is swallowed up, and it disappears. Even if you try to whip an old body into action, there are limits to what it can do. And besides, I truly do not remember anyone called Kagetora."

We exchanged quiet looks, but none of us tried to force more from her. Lillie thanked Jane for the battle, and Jane thanked Jolteon for reminding her that some feelings could return even when names did not.
