The semifinals began beneath the glass dome with snow shining beyond the walls and the Lanakila crowd packed so tightly that every cheer seemed to shake the mountain. Only four Trainers remained: Lillie, Kiawe, Guzma, and me.
That fact should have felt impossible. A few months ago, Alola's League had only been Professor Kukui's dream, something people discussed with excitement and doubt in equal measure. Now the dream had narrowed into two semifinals, and every remaining battle carried the weight of a region watching itself become real.
Olivia stepped onto the battlefield first as referee, gemstones catching the arena lights. She looked from Lillie to Kiawe with the steady warmth of an island kahuna who expected both strength and honesty. Lillie stood with Snowy beside her, while Kiawe folded his arms with fierce focus.
"We are kicking off today's events with the first semifinal match," Olivia announced. "Give it everything you have, and push yourselves to become better Trainers. I expect nothing less from both of you."
Lillie took a slow breath. "I will."
Kiawe nodded. "So will I."
The screen confirmed the format as two-on-two. Lillie reached for her first Poké Ball, and I felt a small smile rise before the throw even left her hand. When Samurott appeared, Alice leaned forward from the stands with recognition in her eyes.
"Samurott, huh," Alice said, leaning forward.
"Yeah," I said. "That same goofy one."
Samurott heard me from the field and glanced back with wounded dignity. Lillie tried not to laugh, which probably made the look worse.
Kiawe saw the exchange and smiled for only a second before his battle focus returned. That was the strange beauty of this semifinal. Everyone on the field was a friend, yet nobody wanted a soft victory. Lillie had not come this far to be protected, and Kiawe would never dishonor her by lowering his flame.
Kiawe opened with Marowak, who spun its bone club in a burning circle. The match began with Bonemerang racing across the field, but Samurott slid aside and answered with Aqua Jet. Water crashed into Marowak, forcing it back before it could fully recover the returning bone.
"Marowak, Iron Head!" Kiawe called.
Marowak rushed forward, skull lowered in a flash of metal force. Samurott braced and took the blow, then drew a seamitar with practiced speed. "Razor Shell!" Lillie ordered.
The strike rang against Marowak's bone club, water spraying across the battlefield. Kiawe's eyes sharpened, and Marowak spun into Flare Blitz, flames surging despite the Water-type opponent. Samurott fired Hydro Pump, but Marowak twisted aside, fire scraping across the blast.
"Now, Megahorn!" Lillie called with confidence.
Samurott lunged through the steam, horn glowing as the attack struck Marowak cleanly. Marowak staggered, tried to lift its bone again, then dropped to one knee. Olivia raised her flag for Lillie's first victory.
Kiawe returned Marowak with a respectful bow. "You burned brightly."
His second Pokémon was Turtonator. The armored Dragon type landed heavily, facing Samurott with a defensive stillness that made the whole field feel more dangerous. Lillie knew it too. She did not rush, even with a lead.
Samurott struck first with Razor Shell. Turtonator intercepted with Dragon Tail, knocking the seamitar aside before slamming Samurott toward the wall. Samurott recovered quickly, crossing both weapons to withstand another Dragon Tail with Fury Cutter.
"Flamethrower!" Kiawe shouted, fire reflecting in his eyes.
Fire poured over Samurott, and Lillie's eyes narrowed at the damage. "Use Revenge!"
