Winter vacation arrived with a strange kind of freedom. The school break lasted a full month, but none of us were treating it like an ordinary rest. Nate, Rosa, Trenor, Selene, Hau, Lillie, and I boarded the boat to Ula'ula Island with travel bags, healed Pokémon, and the quiet knowledge that Aether's secrets had not disappeared just because classes had paused.

The sea between Akala and Ula'ula looked peaceful enough to make that worry feel distant. Hau spent most of the trip leaning over the rail, talking about malasadas, battles, and how his grandfather always said a new island meant a new chance to grow. Lillie stayed near Nebby's bag, calm on the outside and careful underneath.

I kept thinking about Lusamine's face when the Ultra Wormhole opened at Aether Paradise. She had not worn the same sinister smile I remembered from the Ultra Dimensions, but that almost made the uncertainty worse. A person could hide danger behind worry, kindness, or silence, and Aether still had too many locked doors.

Lillie noticed when my hand brushed Marshadow's Poké Ball. She did not ask whether I was nervous. She simply moved a little closer, letting Snowy press against her ankle while Nebby's bag shifted softly. Her quiet support made the boat feel steadier than the waves did.

Selene checked Rotom's recordings from the Kanto trip while Brionne watched the waves. Trenor stood beside Tauros's Poké Ball with the restless focus of someone already reading unfamiliar ground. Nate wrote descriptions of the sea wind, and Rosa complained that his metaphors made the boat sound more dramatic than it was.

When Malie City's harbor came into view, even I understood why people compared it to Johto. The roofs, towers, and quiet lines of the buildings carried an old elegance that reminded me of Ecruteak and Violet City, though the air still smelled unmistakably Alolan.

Hau jumped onto the dock almost before the boat finished settling. "Land ahoy! All right! Terra firma under foot again!"

Trenor stepped down more carefully and sighed. "That enthusiasm is a little much for a normal dock."

Selene looked up at the tower beyond the city streets. "It does resemble Johto, but this is still Ula'ula Island. The feeling is different under the surface."

"Ula'ula is, like, totally different from Melemele and Akala," Hau said, bouncing in place. "We are supposed to meet the professor, right? Malie Garden? Why a garden? Guess we find out when we get there!"

Our Pokédexes received local area updates as soon as we reached the city. New habitat notes, route alerts, and Ula'ula encounter information appeared across the screens, but I kept it as travel guidance, not a reason to chase every possibility at once.

Rotom read the map information with professional excitement until Selene tapped the edge of her tablet. After the appliance swap, she had become much better at reminding Rotom to slow down before the information became noise. Rotom wobbled once, its meaning clear through the screen, "Area data is helpful, but I will not turn it into orders." Selene smiled and accepted that answer.

"First stop is the Pokémon Center," Lillie said, practical as always. "Then Malie Garden."

"That sounds responsible," Hau said. "So after that, we battle."

I gave him a look. "You already decided that before we healed, didn't you?"

"Only because it is a great idea!" Hau said.

The Pokémon Center gave everyone a few minutes to settle before Hau's energy spilled back into the street. He waited until Nurse Joy returned our teams, then spun toward me with the bright impatience he never bothered hiding.

"I had a great idea, Ash! Come on, let's have a battle!"

"Here and now?" I asked.

Hau grinned. "Full power. Ula'ula arrival battle. That sounds perfect!"
