The stadium felt different the morning after the feast. Mount Lanakila no longer shook with Guzzlord's hunger, and the Ultra Wormholes across Alola had been sealed, but my chest still carried the weight of everything we had survived. Today, the battlefield belonged to one last challenge, and somehow that made the air feel clearer.
Professor Kukui stood across from me, no mask, no secret identity, only the professor who had welcomed me to Alola and pushed this League into existence. Hala stood between us as referee, calm and dignified beneath the morning light. The crowd filled the stands, but the noise faded when Kukui offered his hand.
I took it. His grip was warm and steady. "One full six-on-six battle," Hala declared. "Substitutions are permitted. The battle will continue until one side has no Pokémon able to battle."
Pikachu bounced at my feet, expecting the first call. I knelt and touched his head. "Not first today."
His ears drooped for a second, but then he pressed his forehead into my palm, "Then I will wait for the moment only I can answer." I smiled and stood, feeling how much trust lived in that patience.
"Incineroar, I choose you!" I called, sending my partner into the opening round.
Kukui grinned as if he had been waiting for that exact choice. "I had a feeling you would do that. Come on out!"
His own Incineroar landed across from mine, belt flame roaring. The crowd exploded, and both Incineroar leaned forward like the whole League had been built for this opening. Fire met fire, pride met pride, and the Champion title suddenly felt close enough to burn.
This was not only a match against the person who had built Alola's League. Kukui had watched me grow through school days, island trials, Ultra Beast missions, and the battles that shaped this region's future. Facing him now meant facing the question he had been asking since the beginning: what kind of Champion would Alola's first true title battle create?
"Flare Blitz!" I called, and my Incineroar charged through a cloak of fire.
Kukui's Incineroar planted its feet and used Bulk Up. The impact struck hard, yet Kukui's partner absorbed it with tightened muscles and shoved mine back. My Incineroar skidded, claws carving lines into the field, then circled faster as the first exchange sank in.
"Flame Charge, then Darkest Lariat!" I shouted, trusting speed to open a gap.
Flames gathered around my Incineroar's legs as it darted in, slipping past a Darkest Lariat and striking at Kukui's exposed back. Kukui's Incineroar twisted with its own Darkest Lariat, repelling the blow before it could land cleanly.
Kukui laughed with battle fire in his eyes. "I see what you are trying to do, hoping the boosted speed confuses my Incineroar. But Incineroar have experience battling multiple opponents. There are no blind spots!"
"Then we make one!" I answered, feeling the crowd rise around us.
My Incineroar circled again, flames burning brighter with each pass, but Kukui's Incineroar broke through the ring with Throat Chop. Mine staggered, then answered with Cross Chop when the next attack came in. The clash shook the field and forced both of them apart.
Kukui raised his arm. "Incineroar, Blast Burn!"
The fireball roared forward. My Incineroar did not dodge. He braced, belt flame flaring wide, and I saw what he wanted before I understood whether it was safe. He was trying to take the flame into himself.
"Incineroar, if you can hold it, I trust you!" I shouted.
He absorbed the Blast Burn's power, then gathered it into his belt flame for our improvised Blast Incineroar. The fire surged too hot, too fast. Smoke billowed from his belt, and pain tightened his stance until even the crowd's cheering faltered.
