Konikoni City felt quieter after the Grand Trial. Olivia had sent us back from the Ruins of Life with Rockium Z, Tapu Lele's healing still bright in our memories, and Rockruff walking beside me with its head lowered.
The other two Rockruff stayed close too. They had watched the Grand Trial from our side, and both seemed restless in different ways. One watched Olivia's Midday Lycanroc with clean, focused interest. The other kept glancing toward the shadows, as if every challenge needed to be met head-on.
Lillie noticed before I said anything. "They are all changing, but not in the same direction."
"That is what makes it hard," I said. "If I treat them the same, I might miss what each one needs."
The Rockruff from the Grand Trial pressed against my leg and then backed away, ashamed again. Dartrix perched nearby, still ruffled from the battle, but he gave Rockruff a steady look instead of anger.
Dartrix's meaning came through clearly, "You are forgiven. Do not make me repeat it all day."
Rockruff lowered its ears. It understood, but guilt did not vanish just because forgiveness was offered. Sometimes it had to be carried until the heart was strong enough to set it down.
Olivia let us use a rocky training field near Konikoni before she prepared for Hau's challenge. Kukui stayed nearby with his notebook, while the rest of our friends watched from the shaded path.
The first Rockruff stepped into the sunlight. It had watched Olivia's Lycanroc move with speed instead of fury, and its paws kept testing the ground like it wanted to learn that rhythm.
"Start with control," Olivia said. "Midday Lycanroc does not win by crashing forward. It wins by reaching the place it chose before the opponent knows it moved."
Olivia had us set three stone markers across the field. One was close, one was halfway across, and one stood almost hidden behind a tilted rock. She told us that Midday Lycanroc learned best when the path looked simple but the answer was not straight.
Pikachu volunteered to act as the moving target. He darted between the stones, not attacking, only changing direction every time Rockruff thought it had guessed correctly. Rockruff's first tries were too eager. It lunged after where Pikachu had been instead of where Pikachu's feet were taking him.
"Do not chase the tail," Olivia called. "Read the shoulders, the paws, and the intention."
Rockruff stopped, breathing hard. I could see it thinking, and that was what made me proud. It no longer barked because it had missed. It waited until Pikachu leaned toward the hidden marker, then sprang before Pikachu completed the turn.
The tap against Pikachu's side was gentle, but it landed cleanly. Pikachu rolled with it and popped back up, grinning. The sunlight flashed across Rockruff's fur, and I felt the moment arrive before the glow began.
I sent Pikachu forward for a light practice round. "No heavy hits. Let Rockruff find the timing."
Pikachu dashed in a zigzag, sparks kept low. Rockruff followed, not by barking louder or lunging harder, but by cutting across the angle. It missed twice, then adjusted its paws and reached Pikachu's side with a clean burst.
"That is it," I called. "You are not chasing. You are arriving."
Rockruff's body lit under the bright Akala sun. Its shape stretched taller, mane sharpening into pale stone spikes as confidence replaced hesitation. When the light faded, Midday Form Lycanroc stood with alert eyes and quick, balanced paws.
Rotom floated close and registered the new form.
