Route 5 opened ahead of us with the kind of quiet that made every rustle in the grass feel important. Paniola Town still sat behind us, warm with Contest memories, but the road ahead split the day into new choices. One path pointed toward Lush Jungle, while the other bent west toward Brooklet Hill.

Professor Kukui checked the direction with a small nod. "Brooklet Hill is where your next trial waits, so west is our best path for now."

Lillie adjusted Snowy in her arms and looked toward the branching roads. "Lush Jungle will have to wait, then."

Selene's Grubbin leaned from her side, watching the sunlit grass near the Lush Jungle path with curious energy. Its little claws gripped the ground, its meaning eager, "There is power in those plants, but not yet."

Selene smiled and touched its head. "Not yet. We follow the road we chose first."

We had barely started toward Brooklet Hill when a familiar voice carried from the clearing ahead. Hau was laughing, but it was the kind of laugh that came after losing a battle and trying to turn the sting into something lighter. Then I heard another voice, colder and sharper, and my feet stopped before my thoughts caught up.

"Are you even taking this seriously?" Gladion asked.

Hau stood with his hands behind his head, his Pokémon gathered around him and looking tired but not hurt. Across from him stood Gladion, darker clothes catching the light badly, like he wanted the whole route to keep its distance. Seeing him there shocked several of us, but Lillie went completely still.

"Hau, are you all right?" I called.

Hau turned and waved like losing had only made the day more interesting. "Whoa, hey, guys! This guy is plenty scary!"

Gladion's eyes shifted toward us, and for one second the hard edge on his face cracked. "Ash? Lillie? What are you doing here?"

"What do you think?" Lillie asked, stepping forward. "We are doing the Island Challenge and heading to Brooklet Hill. What about you? You argued with Mother and left with Type: Null without saying anything to me."

Mallow looked between them, clearly trying to understand the weight in Lillie's voice. "Who is he?"

Nate answered quietly before the question could hang too long. "Gladion is Lillie's older brother. He traveled with Ash and Lillie before, back in Sinnoh. He is not a stranger to them."

Gladion's gaze sharpened at Lillie. "You are doing the Island Challenge?"

Lillie lifted her chin and showed her Fightinium Z. "Yes. I beat Kahuna Hala and earned this. You do not know how difficult things became after you left."

Gladion's expression shifted again, smaller this time. "What happened?"

I kept my voice steady, because the truth was too heavy to throw like an accusation. "Lillie also ran from her mother, and she was trapped in Ultra Metropolis for half a year. We made it back safely, but that does not erase what happened."

Gladion flinched. Type: Null stood beside him, helmet hiding its eyes, but its body angled toward Lillie as if it understood that this road had stopped being only a battleground. The silence that followed felt rougher than Hau's lost battle.

I remembered the Gladion who had traveled with us before, who could be awkward and sharp but still answered when Lillie called his name. This Gladion felt like he had wrapped every fear in metal and called the armor strength. The worst part was that I understood why someone might do that, even if I hated seeing it happen to him.

Lillie's hand tightened against Snowy's fur. Snowy did not flinch. She only leaned closer, her meaning gentle, "Say what you need to say. I will stay."

Gladion clenched his fist. "My partner and I are training to get stronger. We have to get stronger. Most of my time now goes to working for Team Skull as their muscle."
