49. A Letter 💌

As karishma entered the dining room that evening, mami ji looks  at her. "Aa gyii ," she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "Besharam ki Tarah khana khane, nah koi sharam na koi lihaaz." She crossed her arms and glared at Karishma, who lowered her eyes and walked to her seat.

She was about to sit down when she saw Nani's warm smile. Nani gestured for her to sit next to her. Karishma felt a surge of gratitude and love for her, who always treated her kindly.

She noticed that pji was also at the table, eating silently.

Karishma wondered what's going on in pji mind, She brought back to reality by the sound of pji's chair scraping the floor. She looked up and saw pji getting up from the table, leaving her plate half-eaten. Pji glanced at her briefly, then turned away and walked to her room, closing the door behind her.

Karishma felt a pang of hurt and anger. She wished pji would talk to her, try to understand her.

She felt tears stinging her eyes. She was about to get up and run to her room, when she felt Nani's hand on her shoulder. She looked at Nani, who smiled gently and picked up a spoon. She scooped some rice and curry from Karishma's plate, and brought it to her mouth. "Karishma phle khaa lo beta," she said softly. "You need to eat."

Karishma shook her head, trying to refuse. She had no appetite, no energy, no will. She just wanted to be with Haseena.

Nani persisted, nudging the spoon against her lips. "Mere liyaa thoda sa khalo " she whispers.

Karishma gave in, and opened her mouth. She tasted the rice and curry, and felt a warmth spreading in her stomach. She looked at Nani, who smiled again and fed her another spoonful. Karishma felt a flicker of hope and gratitude. She knew Nani cared for her, even if she didn't approve of her relationship with Haseena. She knew Nani was the only person who could help her.

She decided to tell Nani everything. To tell her how she felt about Haseena, how they had met, how they had fallen in love. To tell her how happy Haseena made her, how much she missed her, how much she needed her. To tell her how pji had reacted, how she had hurt her, how she had locked her away. To tell her how scared and lonely she was, how desperate and hopeless she was.

She decided to tell Nani everything, and to ask for her help.

She swallowed the rice and curry, and opened her mouth to speak.

Later that night, Karishma lay on her bed, staring at the ceiling. She couldn't sleep. She kept thinking about everything that had happened.

She had told Nani everything, and Nani had listened. She had listened with patience, compassion, and understanding. She had not judged her, scolded her, or rejected her. She had hugged her, comforted her, and supported her.

Ani had given her some advice. Advice on how to deal with pji, how to communicate with Haseena, how to plan for their future. Advice on how to be happy, how to be brave, how to be free.

She had also given her a gift. A gift that made her heart skip a beat, that made her eyes shine with joy, that made her lips curve into a smile. A gift that was hidden under her pillow, that she held in her hand, that she pressed to her chest.

A gift that was a letter from Haseena.

Naina:(replied seeing her happy face) tumhari haseena jii aayi thi sham mein jab tum khana khake uper aa gyi thi, woh b tumhari woh dono kyaa naam h unka haa santu aur mishri k sath....

Jaldii jao bahar hi wait kar rahi h woh...

Flashback...

Santu and Mishri, who had helped her sneak into the neighborhood. She had come with a letter in her hand, a letter that she had written for Karishma. But her bad luck or say Good luck she got caught by Nani.

Nani:(sternly) Tum yaha kya kar rhi ho !?

Haseena:(bit nervous) dekhiye hum..hum bas Karishma ko yeh latter Dene aaye hai aur kuch b nhi...aap please pji ko mat batana ki hum aaye the warna Karishma ko aur dikkat ho jayegi...

Nani:(raising her eyebrows) maloom h pushpa ne waha college mein kyaa Kiya tha phir b tum yaha aa gyii !?

Haseena: pyaar Kiya h humne Karishma unka sath nibhane k liye naa ki mushkil ki ghadi mein sath chhorne k liye.

Nani was really impressed with her thoughts, the way she was talking with her.

Nani had agreed, and had taken the letter from Haseena.

Haseena turned was about to go when Nani stop her, "Ruko !! Yahi pr kuch der intezaar kro hum Karishma ko balcony mein bhejte h."

Haseena(smiles genuinely): aapka bohut bohut shukriya.

Nani smiles back, "aur sambhal kar koi aur dekh na le." Saying this she went inside.

Nani: Naina ! Suno yeh karishma ko de dena aur kehna haseena uska intezar kar rahi bahar..

Naina then goes to Karishma's room, and place letter under pillow.

Flashback ends

Karishma jumped out of bed and sprinted towards the balcony. Her heart pounded like a drum in her chest, and tears brimmed in her eyes. She saw Haseena across the street, standing on her own balcony. Her lips curved into a small yet sad smile.

Haseena's eyes brightened when she saw Karishma. She whispered her name, barely audible. "Karishma..."

Karishma nodded, a slight smile on her face. She felt like she could hear Haseena's voice, even though they were so far apart. Tears streamed down her cheeks.

Haseena shook her head, telling her not to cry. She reached out her hand, as if to touch her. She sobbed, her shoulders shaking.

Naina: Karishma jaldii papa aa rhe h !!

Karishma turned around, fear was visible in her eyes. Karishma gesture haseena that she has to go haseena nodded with sad smile.

Karishma mouthed the words, "I love you". Haseena nodded, tears rolling down her face. She mouthed back, "I love you too".

They looked back at each other, one last time. They blew a kiss, and waved bye.
